Stayed a night at the Novotel Cape Panwa hotel - this hotel is located well away from the popular Patong Beach in Phuket. There is one restaurent and that's it - you'll need to take a taxi if you want to get to anywhere. Beach is quiet - but rocky about 1-2 metres from the shore. Don't expect to use the gym - very small. Great breakfast that comes with the room rate. Can be noisy as they have a live band 3x per week and it plays to midnight - since the land area is small, no room is quiet (unless you are deaf)! Staff is excellent - friendly and very helpful. Best thing about the hotel it has BBC instead of CNN! (Ask for a room facing the bay - great sunsets) Buy your own drinks etc before you get to the hotel as there are no shops nearby.

My husband and I stayed here for 5 nights in March, 2006. We had an excellent time. The resort has many good qualities.

Location: excellent if you want to relax on the beach, away from the crowds. Away from the busy drinking/party scene. The hotel is on a secluded part of the island, but Phuket town is only 15 minutes away. There is a free shuttle the hotel runs multiple times daily into town, to Patong beach, and back.

Rooms: excellent, newly renovated, large size, clean. Our deluxe seaview room exceeded my expectations. Had king-size bed, large sofa, desk, refridgerator, mini bar, television with satellite tv (English, French, German, and Thai channels), in-room safe, closet, many extras (slippers, robes, umbrella, sewing kit, nail file...). You are provided with 2 free bottles of water daily to your room (tap water is not drinkable). The balcony was really nice, and we had a wonderful view.

Food: very good. Most of the items on the hotel menu were delicious! The menu had a large variety to choose from - Thai, American, European foods. (I was disappointed with the steak, it wasn't a good cut and was over cooked) The food is great and it is reasonably priced. The breakfast buffet was awesome! There were hot items (eggs, bacon, sausage, grilled tomato, French toast, pancakes, steamed vegetables, etc.), cold items (fruit, yogurt, salads), a bread table (pastries and an assortment of breads), as well as 5 juice choices, milk, tea, and coffee. The breakfast buffet was open from 6:30 to 10:30am.

Beach: good. The beach is kind of small, but the sand is really soft and the ocean water is warm and clean. You can only swim during high tide, which some days was until 2:30pm or as late as 5:00pm. The beach is really quiet, since there are only 2 other small resorts nearby. You'll want to get to the beach early though, as the lounge chairs were usually all occupied by around noon.

Activities: excellent. The resort has many daily activities and evening programs that are put on for the guests (Thai language lesson, scuba diving instruction, mountain walks, theme dinners in the evening, etc.). You can book various activities through the hotel, such as elephant riding and island cruises.

Spa: fair. I wasn't impressed with the spa treatments I had. I had a 60 minute Thai massage, which didn't help any of my muscle tension. The 30 minute Shoulder, Back, and Neck massage wasn't helpful either. The Thai method of massage just isn't for me, I'm used to having a registered massage therapist work on my body.
Also, I had a Fruity Rejuvenating facial, it was good but I was a little cold during the facial and covered by a too-small towel.
The spa offers a number of other treatments such as waxing, manicures, and pedicures.

Overall, we had a really good experience. I would recommend this resort to my friends and family.

small resort, on the south east coast of phuket island. if u are looking for a quiet and nice holiday, this is your place. the resort has different kind of rooms : deluxe rooms (situated around a tropical garden, no good views, no much privacy cause strolling people around can look in your room), seaview deluxe rooms (this is one we had, main building, floors 2 till 4, try to catch one in the middle, full seaview) and beachfront deluxe rooms (on the beach, but smaller and not renovated). i considered the seaview deluxe rooms as a good choice. the rooms are fully renovated in a luxurious boutique style. great bedding accomodations, big plushy sofa, nice wooden furniture, terrace with fan and full seaview. nice bathroom, wooden floor tiles and walk in shower. this hotel in the accor group was overtaken as a Novotel (ex-Mercure). Although it is a 3,5 star resort, the service level has one of a 5 star resort ! all staff are friendly ! we changed 4 times rooms when checking in, the reception staff and the bell boys stayed friendly although we were a little tired from the trip and difficult to handle. the service is far beyond the ones we had all over thailand. the least i can say is that the hotel hasn't suffered from the beer drinking people looking for sex and disco dancing, staying mostly at the west coast (patong/kara/kamala etc). only negative point : the hotel hasn't got a white sandy beach. it's a relatively small beach, although private, u can only swim with high tides, due to broken coral reefs and stones which are in the water and come out by low tide, so u can not get in the water and it gives a bad view. i asked the hotel manager about this but they aren't allowed to remove the old corals, due to ecological reasons. besides of that point, the little things make your stay complete : sleepwell flowers in the room, good morning cards at breakfast table.... very extensive breakfast, not comparible by other 5 star deluxe resorts in phuket. i rarely saw such a service level in a 3,5 star resort. international public, we had nice chats with australians, canadians and french guests. the hotel is really secluded from all restaurants or busy life, but u can easily rent a motorbike (as we did) for 300 bath a day (approx. 10 dollar) to look around. if u r looking for a quiet holiday, with a personal touch, without the big overcrowded resorts, this is your place !

Yes, We spent three nights in Panwa Beach Resort from December 25 through December 28th. We were one of the lucky ones with a beach front room that survived. My wife and I felt the eartquake that morning, then we went for breakfast, back to our room for our cameras around 10am, then we left for an elephant trek nearby. We later learned the waves hit the Island about 20 to 20 minutes later. When we got back our beachfront room was no more. The staff put us on a third floor room. Despite the event our stay at the hotel was great. The beach front rooms are clearly a lot better and less noisy than the rest. They are worth the 20 USD you pay extra for them - go for it! Breakfast and food in general was good. The hotel is isolated from the touristy areas. So if you want to be around hundreds/thousands of people with restaurants, bars and shops all around this is not the place for you. This is a great place to relax and enjoy the beach and the ocean.

We spent two weeks at the Panwa Beach Resort from 21st December to the 3rd January 2005. The hotel was clean and well run. We did have a balcony and sea view, if you looked sideways that is. The food and service were excellent throughout our stay. The staff were friendly and helpful at all times.
Ah the tsunami? Well, we felt the earthquake, but it was not violent, just rattled the aircon ducting really. No damage to the hotel at all. Later we were enjoying our breakfast, overlooking the pool and beach, when it struck, apparently... The first we knew of it was when we tried to book a taxi and were told that we were restricted to the hotel. On investigation, it seemed that the main wave had partially flooded the rooms at the beach level and the kiddies club, but that was it. No guests were injured, though there had been a couple of lucky escapes.
The hotel management closed the beach in case of further waves for 2 or 3 days for guest safety. All excursions by boat, or to other islands were also cancelled for a few days. At no time was there any shortages or disruptions to the hotel's running.
While the safety restrictions were in force, we took the oportunity to visit the national parks on the island, hike up to waterfalls and do some elephant trekking, which we had on our agenda anyway.
When the boat trips reopened, we were on one of the 1st trips out to Phang Nga bay to James Bond Island etc.
I would certainly not change my plans to visit the Panwa Beach Resort. It has proved to be one of the safest places to stay in Phuket and apart from some damage in Patong, Phuket is open for business. Enjoy!
