We had a nice walk up to the Plough across Redhill common. The Shere Drop was excellent and the Ploughman’s was superb. We also had a couple of variety’s of jacket potatoes and the ham egg and chips. All were to a very high standard.

Where to start?

This is as traditional a British pub as you are likely to visit.

From the moment you walk in, you'll just know what an exceptionally well-run pub it is.

The fire is crackling, the staff welcome you and nothing is too much trouble.

There is an ever-changing selection of traditional beers (which you can taste in advance if that's your thing) as well as a superb selection of cider and lager. I do not drink gin, but have often gawped at the many varieties available - there is a separate gin menu!

The food menu is varied and updated daily and is always served promptly. This is not pre-package land - food is fresh and from what I can see, sourced locally - the eggs are delivered by hand, for example.

No children under the age of 10 are allowed in the bar, and why not? It's a USP as far as I, and many others, are concerned. As someone else said in their review, "Why doesn't this pub do what other pubs do?" - well, thanks for answering your own question. If you have kids, you have plenty of choices.

Parking is plentiful and easy and ideal for a quick dog-walk before you pop in.

The best pub in the area by some considerable distance.

Our usual weekend lunch choice locations are all overcrowded at this pre-Christmas time. Looking for somewhere different we visited The Plough today, on what was a cold dank Sunday lunchtime. The welcoming log fire, and sensible level of Christmas decorations, which greeted you as you entered the establishment set the tone for the experience in this aged building. It is located in a quaint English style village country setting, just off the A23 south of Redhill Surrey, in the area of St John. This is largely a locals pub which provides a good friendly atmosphere.
We just wanted a sandwich and drink. The selection available was excellent and with a choice of different fresh cut breads was prepared quickly and well presented with sides of salad and chips. Two rounds of sandwiches with sides of fresh and tasty salad and chips on each, with a pint and a Latte was just a fraction over £19.00. There were two staff follow-ups to ensure we were happy and had all we wanted.
The main menus listed on the walls, along with Steaks and mixed grill etc, consisted of what I describe as proper wholesome English food such as Meat Pudding, Liver & Bacon Lasagna etc, not just restaurant type reconstituted grilled and fried fast food, again all at reasonable prices. The Sunday Roast served to a nearby table looked excellent, if a little large - who would complain at that.Again the price wasn't large.
A final observation is that all the staff are both efficient and very friendly, even to new faces which makes a world of difference. This was confirmed in the Landlord coming over to speak for a few minutes on his tour round the regulars. I wish to congratulate the Landlord on an excellent run pub.
I will definitely be returning for dinner in the evening once Christmas is over.

I hadn't been here for many years, but I knew the Plough had a very good reputation, judging from the loyalty of its many regular customers.

I went there with a group of a dozen or so diners, for our pre-Christmas lunch. Our table was beautifully prepared for us, with named places for each guest bearing the choices he/she had earlier made for each of the three courses. When we had to replace one guest who couldn't come with another who hadn't booked, they were very accommodating in changing all the meals chosen to suit that person.

The meals arrived quickly, and more importantly, all more-or-less together, thereby ensuring we all could enjoy a meal that was still hot. As the vegetables and gravy were already on each plate, that task was made easier still. When two diners, with their meals already on the table, had to leave the restaurant for 15 minutes for an unforeseen problem, the waiting staff, kindly and without having to be asked, took their plates away to reheat them.

The main course, in my case turkey, was very good and quite substantial, without being outstanding or different in any way. One person who had the vegetarian option said it tasted rather bland. However, I especially liked my dessert, the Plum & Pecan Nut Bakewell Tart with Rum & Raisin Ice Cream, which was just delicious.

The service from the staff was excellent, aided by the fact that they were not particularly busy on that day. However, I thought the price of £34 for a 3-course meal, which included a 10% compulsory service charge, was a little on the high side. I would much rather have been able to choose whether to give a tip, which I would have done here, and to have ensured that it went direct to the staff.

Such a pleasure to have so much that is actually home made. Came for office lunch, lovely table setting, superb staff, lovely real fires. Food beautifully home made but may be too generous portion of main course. Lamb superb. Best of all i like the food being home made, least I liked was too much of main course. Excellent!
