“Lovely staff”
Reviewed 21 April 2012

As stated elsewhere, the reception staff notably for us Rita and Martin, as well as the housekeeping staff especially Margaret, could not be faulted for their personal attention to detail and friendliness. Their presence made our holiday very pleasant.
The hotel was very clean yet with a relaxed atmosphere that is often lacking in other 5* hotels.
However, as with many reviewers we did note some things which really let the hotel down. Like the previous reviewer, we too were disappointed with the Corinthia Villa restaurant. We ate there on the first night but we so unimpressed that we chose not to return there again. The meal was a buffet meal, which I was unable to eat (I am vegetarian and there was very little that did not contain meat). I left having eaten only a single bread roll and two small (and I do mean very small) spoons of vegetables, yet we were still charged the full set menu price of around £30. The inattention of the waiters who failed to note that I had left with our daughter only five minutes after arriving may have been a contributing factor to this oversight. My husband stayed to eat the full three courses but found that the quality of the food in the main course was very poor, suggesting that it tasted like it could have been leftovers from the Easter Sunday buffet lunch. We decided from then on to eat out at a restaurant opposite - The Melita, which was reasonably priced with a varied menu.
We did however eat from the room service menu on our last night, which was reasonably priced as well as being very nice (maybe we had had our first meal on the chef's night off).
I must also concur with other reviews about the Spa, which while once again having lovely staff was however let down by the state of the decor which was very poor with peeling paintwork, no doors on the changing rooms, and something in the pool that our daughter managed to cut her feet on three times!
However, we would happily return as we did enjoy our time there but hope that the problems that I and other reviewers have mentioned are dealt with as they do let the side down somewhat.
Finally, the hotel is very well placed for travelling around the island. Previously we stayed in another 5* in St Julian's, which was right in the middle of things but still had to hire a car to get around. The Corinthia Palace is in a much quieter area yet we found it much easier to get to the places that we wanted to go to as the hotel had an excellent free bus service as well as taxis on standby for guests and was also on excellent bus routes.

Room Tip: Avoid rooms 304 and 305 if it is windy, as the air conditioning unit on the roof rattles like crazy...

In many ways this is a difficult review to write. My wife and I got married at this hotel and so have very fond memories of our stay at that time. Unfortunately our most recent stay was not so perfect. Other reviewers have commented on the 'friendly' atmosphere of the hotel, and we would have to concur completely with this; we were greeted with a genuinely warm smile and even upgraded once the reception staff realised we were returning guests. Our room was, as you would expect from a 5* establishment, spotless and comfortable.

My critisism is not really with the hotel itself, but with the restaurant. The Corinthia room is lauded as a fine dining restaurant and having eaten here before we expected it to be just that. Unfortunately our experience fell a little short of this -

The restaurant itself is housed within a maltese villa and is quite striking and grand however, the staff seem to have adopted a kind of haughty aloofness which really doesn't fit with the aforementioned 'friendliness' of the hotel. Ordering wine was difficult as it seemed only the restaurant manager was allowed to deal with this. As it turned out, the Pouilly Fuisse featured on the wine list was not available thus causing further confusion and delay in service. We instead chose a pretty good Sancerre (the wine could not be described as 'competitively priced'). Ordering our food also proved a bit difficult. Our waiter did not know what that day's fresh fish was, so consequently had to go and find the manager once again. The fish was sold to us as 'a sort of grouper'. 'How is it served?', we asked. 'Sort of poached', came the reply. Suffice to say neither one of us took that option instead both choosing chicken with foie gras and split pea cassoulet. The chicken was dry and stringy and not at all what one would expect from an establishment such as this. My wife was unable to eat any of hers and pointed this out to the waiter who informed us he would pass on our concerns to the chef. This did not however extend to our bill, which was considerable!

All that said our starters and desserts were good, although the chocolate sauce served with mine was in fact caramel! We were offered neither coffee, nor our bill and eventually made our way to the cash desk. This was an expensive meal which was mediocre and disappointing. There are far better restaurants on the island offering better quality food and far better value for money.

The rest of our stay was fine, though neither myself or my wife appreciated the 8.30 knock on our bedroom door so someone could 'check the mini bar'. If this had been any other hotel, anywhere else in the world I would not have remained so stoical and would have complained at once to the general manager, but as I've stated previously, we are extremely fond of this hotel and Malta and thus this was a very difficult review to write. I sincerely hope this less that 5* experience was a one off; perhaps due to the earliness of the holiday season. I would like to think so, but attention to detail and a little staff training might be overdue.

This hotel is a wonderful option for a great time in Malta. The rooms and along beautiful wide corridors which emit a classic and timeless elegance consistent throughout the hotel. No noise can be heard in the bedrooms and the beds are wonderfully large and comfortable and allow for a great nights sleep.
The most prominant point to be made about this hotel is how universally friendly and helpful the staff are, without a doubt the best example of this we have ever come across around the world. We would like to extend our sincere gratitude to Chris who was great throughout our stay and particuarly to Martin who continually went way above and beyond the call of duty. His attention to detail, thoughtfullness and ability to anticipate our needs and make wonderful recommendations and suggestions was perfect. We could never have imagined a staff member in any hotel would have done as much to make a guests stay so enjoyable. He is a unique and wonderful asset to this establishment. We highly recommend The Corinthia Palace hotel & Spa and thank Martin, Chris and all the very friendly staff for making our vacation a memorable experience, we really enjoyed our time here and now have a very positive impression of the hotel, Malta and the wonderful Maltese people. We will definitely be returning to this hotel and would highly recommend it.

Having been awarded a “Malta People’s Award” (again in 2011), we were really looking forward to our stay in the Corinthia Palace and Spa. What must be made clear is that the word “Resort” is missing from the name, and as such this is a very different 5* establishment to the ones that you will find in St Julian or Sliema, or even the Corinthia sister hotel “St George’s Bay”. Certainly, there are all the luxuries you would expect in a 5*: 24 hour reception and room servie, valet parking, concierge, and fresh orange juice to welcome you at Check In. The Corinthia Palace also boasts 2 big restaurants – “The Corinthia” (smart Dress Code essential), and “The Rickshaw” (“Award Winning Chinese, Malaysian and Thai food” – for us it was a bit over-priced and inauthentic – but our holiday home is in Penang). The gym is also excellent (a good selection of cadio machines, weights machines and free weights, including a kinesis gym room), and the spa/indoor pool/Jacuzzi was extremely pleasant (if a little worn). There is an outdoor pool within rather beautiful “sun trap” gardens, and in the summer there would be Al Fresco dining offered at their Pool Lounge/Pizza Pasta Bar. Breakfast was quite extensive – American/English, Continental, as well as European meats and cheeses and cereal/yoghurt/fruit for the healthy eaters. However, despite all this obvious indulgence, and pleasant staff, the Corinthia lacks a warmth that so many other places my partner and I have experienced (5 star to 1 star) exude in abundance. This is a place where children are seen – although definitely not heard, where staff are polite and knowledgeable – and clearly “doing their 5* job”, and where – on closer inspection – their MPA was for “Corporate Social Responsibility” above anything else.

However, don’t let me put you off – the hotel is in a great location to explore (especially if you hire a car – and there is free parking outside). I do actually highly recommend this as generally ,if there is a space, you can park in it - although Valetta has a 5 Euro “congestion charge”. It is much nicer to have the freedom to travel around the Island on your own, and car hire charges are very reasonable (with Europacar it cost us 51 Euros for 4 days plus petrol, and we barely used up half a tank). The travel guides say that Malta is difficult to drive around, however, this is not because of “chaotic frenzy”, but rather because the road signs (and road surfaces) are inconsistent, and the drivers are an eclectic mix of “Sunday drivers” and “boy racers”.

This also means that a visit to “The Blue Lagoon” off Comino Island is much easier - don’t take the package trips (costing between 35-55 Euros for a “full day” – often because of the multiple hotel pick ups), we drove up to Cirkewwa where we caught the “Comino Ferry” (10 Euros each return, running at ten past the hour until about 16.10) strolled round the island ourselves, went into the Comino Tower (also the setting for “The Count of Monte Cristo”’s “Chateau D’If), and swam in the lagoon (mind the jellyfish), and caught the ferry back in time for a late lunch in Silema...no rush, no fuss, and much less cost.

The Corinthia Spa and Palace is a very luxurious place, the rooms big with a high level furnishing, the staff friendly and offering a very good service. The bar is lovely, they mix very delicious cocktails and you have easy listening live music every night (which do not disturb your sleep or is to be heard in the rooms). Only drawback is the nearby street which is highly frequented and accordingly noisy. Next time I would book a room not to the garden (which means street) but to the pool (very nice).
