First of all I have to give huge credit and thanks to Ingrid and Denis (the owners) for helping us make our honeymoon an absolute dream. Ingrid was so helpful during online communication well before we arrived and provided many useful tips and helped answer any questions we had in terms of our stay. Once there both her and her husband Denis made us feel instantly welcome. They were there when you needed them for restaurant recommendations or the like but also gave us plenty of our own space when you just wanted to relax. Excellent hosts through and through.
The Cabanac bungalow is located just across the road from the main house and is literally less than a 2 minute walk to the AMAZING secluded beach at the front of the main property. A stone throw off the beach there is plenty of coral with a huge array of fish life which will keep any keen snorkeler busy day after day. There are also two kayaks available to use and if you have a bit of energy a paddle out to the ship wreck on the edge of the main reef is a must. If you prefer a more relaxed vibe then basking on this beach will melt your heart. Stunning white sands on a stretch of about 100m and we were pretty much the only ones using this our entire stay. The colours of the ocean were breathtaking and we even commented to the owners the view was something you see (usually Photoshoped) on internet pics of beautiful beaches. No hawkers trying to sell you things and besides the odd speed boat ferrying people around the lagoon we felt we were on a deserted piece of paradise. There are also beach loungers available for the guests under some trees which can provide welcome relief from the sun.
If you need a break from the sea and sand there is a private pool for the Cabanac guests and at the back of the property there is a forrest/woodland with huge amounts of bird life. Our Tecoma Studio (one of 3 studios in the Cabanac Bungalow) was quaint but exactly what we needed. Kept spotless everyday by the wonderful cleaner Milan, the studio is on the first floor and has a balcony at the entrance with a sitting area. Inside there is a small kitchen and eating area, a separate sitting/reading area, a closed off bathroom and a very comfortable bed at the end - all very well laid out to make the place feel bigger than it actually is. Thankfully there was an air conditioning unit which cooled the whole studio during the muggy nights which we were very grateful for!
There are a number of decent restaurants in the area and the Blue Bamboo (with in walking distance from the bungalow) has very good pizzas. We hired a car though a company called Claire & Sailesh (Claire is brilliant and the whole process was very easy and they even dropped the car off and collected from the bungalow). We explored the island over two days and would highly recommend the drive from Pointe D'Esny to Chamarel through the Black River Gorges National Park. As Denis said, you need a lot of time to be able to experience all the South of the island has to offer but he gave us a few must see things which did not disappoint.
The nearest super market is located a few kilometers up the coast in Mahebourg and on Mondays they have a massive flea market which is worthwhile visit if you are looking for gifts or clothes at a cheaper price then conventional stores. In Mahebourg you can also find more tourist centered activities - catamaran trips, kite surfing, skiing, etc.
Our stay was everything and more we were looking for: relaxing on a gorgeous beach with very few people but still things around to keep you occupied should you need it. Clean, safe surroundings with warm hosts and a tidy living space were just extras. Highly recommended and we will be back!
The studio and its facilities exceeded all our expectations, as did the warm and caring welcome, advice and service we experienced from Ingrid and Denis and the staff. From the little touches, like a bowl of fruit, beers, cold drinks and milk in the fridge; a flower arrangement on the table - all complimentary. You have the run of two properties, one with a lovely tropical garden and a pool, the other with a small stretch of flawless beach less than 100 metres from your bedroom, where you can lounge in the sun or sit in the dappled shade of the Casuarina trees. You can bring your meal and your wine - or go for a sunrise swim in the glorious reef-encircled lagoon, where you can literally walk in and start looking at the coral and fish within ten metres of the edge. There are Kayaks for the use of visitors, but bring your own goggles. For those with tender feet, rubber swim shoes are advised.
We cannot recommend this venue too highly, and we'd go back like a shot anytime. Many thanks to our hosts with much appreciation from Arne & Estelle
