When we first arrived at Lesedi we were a bit put off because we were early and there was not much activity. We were thinking we might have stumbled into one of those tourist places where we would be a captive audience for shopping. However, once we were a bit closer to time for the activities to begin, we were pleasantly surprised. We started with an introductory video then followed a guide to different "villages" that explained the customs and lifestyles of various African groups. The information was well presented and I especially enjoyed hearing the different languages.
The end of the presentation is traditional dance and music. We also had lunch which showcased some traditional African dishes.
Our driver, arranged by the travel desk at the hotel, is Zulu in background. We especially enjoyed hearing his story about working in Johannesburg; he is from Kwa Zulu Natal and told us that his village life was like what we saw in the presentation.
We were on a tour with a driver from our hotel in Johannesburg, so I am not sure about admission costs. Accommodation is available on site, but we were on a day trip.

Visiting Johannesburg recently, our guide took us to the Lesedi Cultural Village. The village is most interesting, comprising five traditional homesteads which represent the homesteads inhabited by the Zulu, Xhosa, Pedi, Basotho and Ndebele tribes who live according to tribal folklore and the traditions of their ancestors. A local tribal member guided us through these homesteads, explaining the local customs, etc. This provided a fascinating insight into their culture. We were then treated to a dance display. After all this, we enjoyed some traditional African fare for dinner in their Nyama Choma restaurant. The buffet included such exotic dishes as crocodile, kudu, and staple sides including pap, creamed spinach and pumpkin. This is definitely worth a visit if in Johannesburg.

We had a day to explore the Johannesburg area before embarking on a 14-day safari, and spent most of the day at Lesedi. We enjoyed the cultural experience, as well as the dance performance, and the buffet. The food consisted of a number of dishes, including chicken, beef, pork, and various vegetables, but I was particularly happy to get to try crocodile. I also tried mapone worms in one of the village displays.

We spent one night here after a day of activities. The village is very unique and quite large. Our "huts" were towards the back of the compound, but we were able to find our way easily. The accommodations were much more luxurious than I had anticipated. The main room was very large with tribal art and decorations. The bathroom was huge with a great walk in shower. There is a tv in the room, but there is only one channel available. We had breakfast in the morning, and it was a very nice buffet. Great for one or 2 nights.

We are so glad that we added this to our itinerary. It is a very good experience to learn about South African cultures and the different tribes. They walk you around from small village to small village explaining the different greetings and traditions. Then they put on a dance show and highlight the different groups. Very well done. We opted to stay in a traditional Zulu hut for the night and take part in the dinner. the hut was very well decorated and was just like a regular hotel room on the inside, except for the low ceilings (watch your head in the middle of the night). The dinner was excellent and so was the breakfast. Good stalls for shopping for souvenirs. The staff were all very nice and lovely to talk to.
