Diego and his family operate an excellent tour company and restaurant. This is my second tour with Diego (separated by 5 years). Each was wonderful and different. The first was during the flamingo season so there were many hundreds of flamingos and other birds. As well as more people. November is excellent weather but not the height of flamingo mating. Did the 3 hour tour. Diego took the 2 of us to many areas of the reserve I had not seen before. Very beautiful and peaceful. There were a number of resident flamingos scattered around the huge Rio Lagartos reserve. There were also many white and brown pelicans, huge flock of frigate birds, cormorants, shore birds, wood storks etc. As well as large numbers of birds in the healthy mangroves we could hear but could not see. He also took us out of the reserve to a nearby bird island. He is extremely knowledgeable about the flora, fauna and history. It was an excellent way to spend the morning. This was followed by an excellent lunch at the Ria Maya Restaurante. Beautiful views and great food. The fish soup (really a stew) was excellent, fresh seafood and a very tasty broth. Diegos daughter shared her beautiful pictures of sunsets on the Rio Lagartos, only wished could have stayed to see for myself. On the way back to Vallodolid stopped at Ek Balam for a very different but excellent Mayan experience.
