I have just returned from what was hands-down my most beautiful and relaxing vacation ever. The southern end of St. Lucia, beautiful Caribbean beaches, steady calming breezes, local island charm and two of the nicest most accommodating hosts I have ever met. And that doesn’t begin to describe how lucky I was to be able to stay in what can only be described as sheer fantasy turned reality. The Tree House! It’s not just the visual scene, which seems to have touched the imagination of everyone who sees it, it’s the experience. The bedroom, bath and huge open living-lounging area (with private dipping pool, stove, fridge, sink, etc.) are so beautifully designed and built. Local woods, hand crafted furniture and fixtures and the feel of … well, luxury in an island tree house.
The best part for me was the evenings. After the sun goes down, you have your own tropical perch. The sound of the waves on the beach (probably 50 yards away), the wind through the palms and the stars; that was heaven. Lulled me to sleep every night. By sheer accident I was there for a full moon. If you can schedule for that, I would!
If that peacefulness and calm is a little too much at first or if you get a little too much sun on one of the beautiful beaches, the bedroom windows can be closed and the air conditioner can be turned on. I didn’t need it and preferred the nighttime breezes.
As for location, I don’t think it could be any better. I’ve been to the Bahamas, St. John, Tortola and Bermuda, but St. Lucia is the most beautiful. Rain forest, waterfalls, volcano, beaches, mountains, local charm; it has it all. Laborie is on the quieter end of the island and it offers easier access to its best locations. The amazing Pitons, sulfur springs, Botanical Gardens, Tet Paul Nature Trail and waterfalls. Did I mention the beaches? If you want to drive and enjoy crowds, excessive prices and less-than-courteous employees and staff, there are some okay places in the north. For me, the sites, food and people in the south are more genuine, enjoyable and laid back.
So, by way of recommendations, I would say that the tree house and its hosts are the best you could find anywhere! Tony and Jan, the owners and hosts, will pick you up and drop you off at the airport, plus they have a nice car available for rental, so you can get yourself around the island on your own. If you are unable to book the tree house for your trip, go for the other two accommodations they have to offer. Driftwood is a beautiful island-style bungalow, with everything you would need or want. And Mango Splash is a wonderful private apartment, also with everything you will need, with its own access to the beach; just feet away.
