“Home away from home!!”
Reviewed 16 July 2011

12 Hours of tiring journey to Mukteshwar, I questioned if this is what we wanted of a holiday to this remote hill station. Meeting the Gupta family gave me the answer...Mountain Trail was indeed home away from home. Warm family hospitality, cosy cottages combined with delicious cuisine - it had all the indredients for a great hoilday stay!! Adventure seekers will not be disappointed as the resort can arrange for an array of activities for all age groups. The in-house Choco House can sweeten your stay even more. If lucky, the great Himalayas will reveal its majectic self to mesmerise you to stay on... and thats exactly what we did!!!! SAHANA SHARMA, Gurgaon

Room Tip: overlooking the himalyan range

I had been contemplating travelling to the North Indian Hills and finally got a chance to visit the Nainital area. I am so glad that we selected the Mountain Trail Resort - Mukteshwar which is a comfortable driving distance from the Nainital Lake and if I had known of it's beauty I would have not stayed in the crowd and relaxed at this very homely place where the Manager and his team made sure me and my wife took back fond memories. The food was to die for and the rooms were well kept. The sitting area outside our room was a romantic little enclosure where we spent most part of our mornings. Highly recommended for the off-beat seakers.

Mukteshwar seems to specialise in"Ridge" resorts, with Inns and Hotels teetering on the edge of ridges that overlook the Himalayas!Mountain Trail Resort seems to top the list for a good distant view of the Himalayas.Mukteshwar is a quaint, quiet hamlet, with the bulk of it occupied by the Indian Veterinary Institute. The actual town is pretty old world, with charming British colonial buildings,a church or two,an old and pretty Mukteshwar Shiva temple(highest point),and Jim Corbett's bungalow. There are a few Artisanal craft and food shops, and the Kilmora shop has the best desi Ghee ever! The chocloate shop below the Mountain Trail resort does yummy cookies, ice creams and chocolates.
Coming back to the Mountain Trail resort, the weather,at 8000 feet,is exquisite, cold and pure. The property is well laid out, with plenty of flower beds, and birds thronging the property.Very few of the cabins actually face the valley or have a real Himalayan view. The rooms are basic, and not particularly clean.I respect eco tourism, but have never understood grunge. The toilets are immaculate, and there is running hot water, and, pinch me,a shower with water pressure, which is a big plus on a cold cold day!
The meals had good and bad days. The kitchen cleanliness left a lot to be desired.I was a bit disappointed with the hygiene levels, looking at the tariff.
All in all,the temperature is superb, the place is super popular with large families with children, there is a small children's park, lots of board games and a game room, and walks around Mukteshwar. The jungle walks are actually walks thru Oak and Rhododendron forests, and will reward you with clean lungs, more than animal spotting.
Mountain Trail might not be the best place for a holiday seeking solitude,or for someone seeking TV or luxurious amenities.
Our favourite spot remains Jim Corbett's bungalow grounds, where he chose the most amazing location to make a Flower garden, and which has to be the best viewing point for the Himalayas in Mukteshwar!
For a more eco friendly adventure, try the somewhat pricey but cool Somerset lodge, run by a young landowner and his foreign 'mem',or try out the campsites in Uttarkhand that really give back to the Kumaoni kids who work as guides( the resorts take a large cut from their fees).I also checked out Manju Sharmas Mystic Mukteshwar Lodge.Much cheaper, with smaller rooms laid out in a somewhat congested way.Her plus point was her personal attention, clean loos and insulated rooms.
