A great property with some room for improvement

Review of The Kumaon
4.0 of 5 bubblesReviewed 23 Jun 2022
We spent four pleasant days at The Kumaon in the middle of June 2022.

The property is beautifully located on a ridge with panoramic views of the hills and the Himalayas in the distance (visible on clear days). The view is framed by pine forests and a deep valley. We spent several peaceful hours enjoying the view from the communal terrace as well as the balcony space of our room.

The rooms are spare and functional with white concrete brick and pinewood floors - they direct attention to the vistas The doors to the balcony are framed by glass windows so the views can be enjoyed in bed as well. The balcony is spacious and we spotted many birds in the forest outside. Some outdoor furniture more comfortable than the metal chairs and tables provided would have been a nice touch.

The bathroom in our room showed some signs of wear on the sink and the counters. It is also not well ventilated – an unpleasant and foul odour lingered throughout our stay. The black tiles everywhere do not help and the overall effect is dark and dingy. An update to the bathrooms is essential whenever this property is renovated. Toiletries are excellent (a custom fragrance from Ayca) but were replenished irregularly.

The communal areas are compact but delightful. The library is stocked with an eclectic selection of books and invites relaxation and reflection. The lounge and terrace overlook the mountains and are perfect for leisurely cups of tea.

Where The Kumaon needs a complete rethink, in our opinion, is in the F&B department. Meals are repetitive and the execution of non-Indian dishes is decidedly amateurish. The kitchen will make some small changes to dishes on request and is happy to prepare plates of pasta for kids, but in general, food choices are limited. The set menu (Kumaoni thali) for dinner gets repetitive after a couple of days, and the breakfasts were a letdown as well. We did not buy the excuses offered for limited availability of ingredients, as Almora is not too far away, and we saw well-stocked markets on our drive through there. A bar cart is set up in the lounge in the evenings, which is a nice touch, but inexplicably, we were unable to get a beer throughout our stay.

We would like to acknowledge Mr. Anand at the restaurant who was a warm host for all our meals. Duty Manager Ms. Meenakshi helped us out with medication when one of us had a small injury and her attention to our comfort was much appreciated. We also enjoyed the unmissable rum chais offered by GM Sid who is a pleasant and gregarious host.

Bottom line: this is a beautiful property in a great location. A little more attention to the private spaces and a complete and focused revamp of F&B would elevate it from good to great.

This review is From Abir, age 10. I stayed in the room "Chitai"

The property is surrounded by lush green plants and pine trees. In the mornings, ones is welcomed by buzzing bees picking nectar. This property makes one feel as if they are living in the forest.
The view of Himalayan peaks such as Nanda Devi etc, especially after it rains is spectacular.

What I liked about The Kumaon-
    1. The staff is very polite, friendly and courteous
    2. The property is very charming
    3. The rooms are very spacious and the balconies are huge
    4. The common terrace is spacious too and the area to dine has been designed very well
    5. They offer a very good selection of treks/hikes. The naturalists (Suraj, Nandan and Abhinav) are friendly and knowledgeable. It was a lovely experience to be greeted by Gokul, Anand, and Gajendra after a long trek, who set picnics for us. Meenakshi and Pushkar at the front desk are friendly too.
    6. Special mention to Hiroo for putting in a huge amount of hard work in cleaning the property
    7. The property dogs, Jun No and Elsa are super cute

In my opinion, things which can be improved-
    1. More kid-friendly structures like swings etc.
    2. Outdoor sitting areas like hammocks
    3. Better selection of books- some books for kids and a more updated library
    4. While the food was delicious and they serve a fixed menu daily, a better selection of desserts is required- we were bored of eating kheer

Room tip: Choose a room closer to the lounge, specially for people who have trouble walking

Beautiful property -the location, the mountain views, the unique architecture, the room with a spacious balcony, the outstanding staff-special callout to Sid, Abhinav,Meenakshi and the restaurant staff, yummy food, the trekking and birding options and adorable Juno and Elsa, the resident mountain dogs. Brighter lights and a hand shower in the bathroom would be great additions.

    Thoroughly enjoyed our sojourn.

Stayed here for 3 nights and wished I could have done more. The place is beyond words. Lovely personal cottages with a view to die for! Imagine watching the mighty Himalayas right from your bed thru the huge glass doors! Hygiene 💯 and food is excellent. Indian thali with a variety of dishes and even continental food was a delight. The property is very beautiful that one would not feel like going out sightseing. But the arrangements they make for shorts trips / walks are also perfectly planned. Riverside picnic and walks thru the pine forests are fun for kids too..The staff and management are wonderful people and ensured that we had a memorable stay.
Though the stay and tours are a bit expensive, it's all worth every penny.
Thanks a lot Siddhesh, Abhinav, Suraj and all the people of The Kumaon for sending us back with great memories. Hope to come back again!

Our family of 4 comprising of 2 adults, a teenager and an 8 year old , spent 10 days at The Kumoan in May and it was a wonderful trip. The curated hiking trips and excursions were well planned, fun and informative for all of us. Abhinav and Suraj who accompanied us were knowledgeable and very helpful.
All the staff at the property were very courteous.
The local food that was served as part of the meals was excellent.
The property and rooms are exceptionally designed to blend in with the hilly terrain and forest and do not disturb the natural beauty of the region.
Being a small property, it felt like a home rather than a hotel.
It was very nice to see that all the people at The Kumoan were proud of their local heritage, be it the majestic mountains and natural environment, the cultural heritage as well as their local cuisine.

Thanks to Sid and Abhinav and every one else for making our trip very memorable.
We will definitely be visiting again.
