Great views and staff, but food could be better

Review of The Kumaon
4.0 of 5 bubblesReviewed 18 Apr 2022
My husband and I went here for a 3 night getaway in mid-April. It is definitely one of the most unique places I have been to with magical views and locals as service staff- super prompt and ready to go beyond throughout. Special mention of Sid, Pushkar, Meenakshi and Suraj who went beyond to ensure we go back with some great memories :)

However, would like to point out that the food definitely needs some thought and improvement to make it taste like holiday food! We were left wanting after every meal ( in taste and quantity) and owing to remote location, we do not have a choice but to eat at the resort itself. However, Sid and the chef did take feedback well and I am sure they would take the requisite actions soon. Secondly, the extras (alcohol, excursions in particular) were very pricey for what they were - I could see that guests could feel cheated on this. Further, the mornings and afternoons get quite warm and the rooms do not have ACs and refrigerators.

Overall, would recommend for the warmth and hospitality of the staff and breathtaking views.

The place is designed beautifully with really nice rooms, thoughtfully placed for privacy and breathtaking views. However, the meals needs significant improvement- very basic and doesn’t feel like a holiday at all where food is concerned. Also, there is definitely a lack of basic amenities in the rooms- air conditioning and refrigerator to name some. Moreover, prices are very steep for extras - INR 600 for a 30ml old monk and INR 5000 for a basic forest walk that you can simply do on your own. The on ground staff and resort manager did try their best to address our concerns and we’re very courteous, however these issues need to be addressed by the leadership or management considering the premium pricing and positioning of the place.

An excellent location, a beautiful layout, our rooms overlooking the mountains, large and spacious with a balcony .
An excursion each morning into the binsar reserve, completed the day with beer and delicious food.
Siddesh Wanikar the resort manager, is totally on the ball, hands on and helpful 😊

Room tip: Its a long drive from either of the airports Bareilly or Pantnagar but totally worth it, pl stay for at least 4 nights.

The Hotel facilities, location and services were indeed welcome. So was the case with the entire service staff, especially by the Kumaon Team, led specifically by a very efficient Meenakshi who was always readily available to assist. however,
    - the Food whilst per-se ok, it lacked much variety. the Chef was unable to prepare Mutton cutlets, Chinese cuisine and south indian fare. They were handicapped by the fixed Menu received from senior manager
    - the visibility of the snow peaks was very poor throughout the 4/5 days that we were at the property, and hence a major highlight of this stay was sadly, totally lost
-the lighting in the bathroom requires to be augmented- wud help morning shaves
-While some guests are fond of dogs, the family of 3 of them were often in the Reception/ lobby area, with the younger pup a bit of a menace.
-There were no evening snacks on the 1st 2 days; it was only by chance that we learnt this facility was served on the terrace over the next 2 days.
-There is a good 10 minute walk from the car park to the Hotel lobby, which is not mentioned in the brochure. this input would help elderly Guests or those with a handicap. We were informed that a golf buggy is being purchased shortly
-While the Hotel does assist with car hire arrangements, we observed subsequently that the costs were on the higher side. It is not clear whether this activity is a profit centre, or a merely service to guests.

The Kumaon is amongst the finest properties I have visited in India.

The hospitality, food and the whole experience is surreal. The property is extremely beautiful and calm. The views are mesmerising.

The hotel provides local delicacies which are extremely tasty and carefully chosen.
