Dara Gaon Village Retreat

I laughed then I read the negative review of this place. Clearly these people do not realise that Darap is in the HIMALAYAN MOUNTAINS. Mountains, ok? This means STEEP hills and quite often walking boots. To recommend Pelling over this place is typical of the marauding masses who hire jeeps and just drive everywhere, rushing around ticking places of interest off the list as quickly as possible. Well, if you are one of these people then please do the rest of us a favour and don't stay here.

Now, if you are like my wife and I and want something authentic, and don't want to be hassled by these annoying jeep-driving, demanding fools then you could do a lot worse than staying here. Yes, the approach IS up a steep path, but that's what makes this place the perfect retreat. It's only 2 minutes from the road anyway so access to the little village is easy.

Shiva and his wife were charming. When we stayed their son was very ill and yet they both found the time to ensure we had a pleasant comfortable stay. Shiva introduced us to Purna who spent a day with us as we explored Darap village. This is my number one recommendation! We hung out with local Limboo people and got a real insight into the Nepali people. I'm a travel photographer and my wife a writer so this was a very exciting experience for us, but I can't imagine anyone not wanting to see this sort of thing.

Food is simple, and Shiva's wife will not join you for dinner whilst you eat with her husband. This isn't a negative point, however. This is genuine behaviour of the Nepali people, and is all part of the experience.

Beds are nice and hard and extremely comfortable, whilst the cabins are great fun to stay in. Sitting on the balcony in the rocking chair looking across at the clouds sweeping through the moutains was a real relaxing treat,

My only gripe with Dara Gaon is that it's a little more expensive than other homestays we have stayed in. If you're happy with the price, the rest will be great fun.

And remember, pack your walking boots because you are in the MOUNTAINS!

One of the home stays that i have come across , the family is incredibly polite and friendly .
We initially planned for 3 days but after visiting we liked it so much that we had to extend it be another two days . I would like to thank shiva sir for the incredible time we had over there , we can still feel the warmth of our stay over there , your kid prabol was amazing .
Food is great and a nice traditional rooms are a perfect recipe for a wonderful gateway .
Landscape is also very good .

We have had amazing time in Sikkim & darjeeling. Amazing people & service. The only blot was Mr. SHIVA GURUNG of Dara Gaon Village retreat. He duped us for money. We had asked him 5-6 times whether or not his place was good for middle aged/old people as well. He assured us about the service and place. However once we reached there it was just too too horrible. The approach was really bad. the pathway to his retreat was really a challenge for just about everyone. Add to that the fact that his service was really pathetic to say the least. Ask for anything and it would be made available after ages.
Avoid this place. If at all you wish to travel to Darap village, live in the cherry village retreat which is up the road. Better stay in the hotels in actual Pelling city.

I wish to find more guest houses like this one during my trips: such a nice and warm and helpfull familly. The atmosphere is so gorgious.
very much clean, very traditional food, but really tasty and clean.
Directly from the house, you can roam the mountain around, meet villagers who grow orchids, cardamon, sometimes you can't refuse a cup of tea! Going to Peiling by the crest is wonderful.
