“creature comforts”

This resort is located a little off the highway from ranakpur and is the ideal place to stay for visits to the Ranakpur Jain temples, Kumbalgarh sanctuary and even Haldi Ghati, if your're inclined to visit the battlefield. Location apart, there's nothing much to reccommend the place. It's practically hewn out of the surrounding forests, so one cannot expect 5-star comforts here, but one does expect clean bathrooms and food served on time. There are cottages with their own little verandahs scattered around the property. Watch out for doors without latches, bulbs that don't function and worst of all, creepy-crawlies that come through the bathroom drain to visit you. If you want food, you gotta order a few hours in advance and present yourself at the restaurant at the appointed hour hoping nourishment will be forthcoming. One look at you, and the waiter dons an apron and disappears into the kitchen to rustle up something. Sadly there are no alternatives in this locality other than the oh-so-expensive palace type of accomodation.

Booked with hostelbookers it looked pricey but the pictures of the location and the nice pool seemed great. Thankfully they didn't get the internet booking so we paid a much lower rate. Room was really nice but it felt like the staff had given up on the place. It was hard to find anyone when we wanted anything and we ended up walking the 2km to the temples because they didn't seem to want to arrange a rikshaw. Restaurant was empty and plates were covered in griome like no one had been here for a while. The pool was green so we didn't try using that. Seems like it used to be a really nice place but they aren't getting many people and they can't really be bothered.

We read reviews on the other hotels near the Ranakpur Temples and set out to try to find something less touristy, less expensive and with more local charm. The Shivika Lake Hotel fit the bill and proved a pleasant stay in a very lovely natural setting.

The lake is actually a government water reserve - it is not called Shivika (hence the reason you can't find this hotel easily on Google Maps). Instead Shivika is the name of the daughter who, along with her parents, run this rather rustic compound.

The accomodations are quite basic, regular rooms set around in "camp-style", rather like a state or national park set up. The rooms have en-suite bathrooms and some have refrigerators. All the rooms that we saw could do with a bit of sprucing up but they were quite inexpensive 500-1000 Rps, so we weren't too picky. Also, we felt that avoiding the tourist locations nearby with their bus loads of patrons and their "buffet" lines and inflated commission-based pricing was worth the very modest inconveniences.

But the real reason we chose to stay at Shivika was the location which more than makes up for any shortcomings in the rooms. The lake is lovely, the wildlife around the hotel is fascinating to watch (birds and monkeys abound) and there is a constant hum of "natural activity" that makes you feel much further away than you really are. The hotel is just off the main road and so very easy to reach and within walking distance of the temples.

The couple who runs the hotel is pleasant and have many interesting stories that they'll share during evenings around the campfire where guests gather before and after dinner. The food was standard and safe. We enjoyed breakfast by the pool, which overlooks the lake and (in season) would probably be a very nice place to spend a few hours. It was a bit chilly when we were visiting and we also had only 1 night, so we didn't make any use of the pool.

One note, in trying to book the hotel from the U.S., we had considerable difficulty. Emails were not returned and 2 phone calls were mis-handled due to difficulty understanding & communicating in English. However, once we were in Ranakpur and stopped by the hotel, we had no problems whatsoever in arranging accommodation. The innkeepers speak very capable English. Also, since our stay, the hotel appears to have improved their Web site and contact information, so hopefully others won't encounter the same challenges in booking that we did. Nonetheless, it was all worth it as we found Shivika Lake Hotel to be a real oasis in the Aravalli Hills!

  • Liked — Natural beauty of the setting in Aravalli Hills
  • Disliked — Upkeep -- but not unreasonable for a camp setting
