As you drive into the gates of the castle , you are mesmerised by this raw beauty right in front of you. Raw because the property is very well maintained keeping its originality and earthly charm intact. Very rarely, do you make a plan as well as get a chance to stay in a beautiful heritage hotel, such as this one. Its was a great choice to explore Mandawa and other areas of the Shekhawati region and come back to this haven of luxury. Extra spacious rooms, friendly staff who were extremely happy to see us as only a few Indian guests visit (at least, that's what we understood), great location, and home-like food added to the overall experience. However, there was one observation which was very saddening and should not be overlooked. I felt very bad when the local folk artists were performing outside and in the dining hall, in the evening, during dinner and had to quite literally go around where the guests were sitting and near every table, play the instrument for a bit near those guests, and then collect the tips. In other words, the lady under the veil very shyly, took out her arm in which she was holding a small bowl collecting tips. Its as if they are on our mercy and have no respect. This is an incorrect message, we are sending out to other people, esp. from other countries. I know this is not the hotel's fault but something should be done, so what if they are everyday common people. They are humans and fellow citizens. Each one deserves respect, kindness and they who have such artistic talent. There should be a donation box or a ticket system in place and all the money should go to them without any hindrance or commissions. As the only other Indian guests during our stay there and the time during dinner, we found it very disheartening. Please look into this request. Thank you.
Note: Do check out the Ramayan Frescoes.
- Official Description (provided by the hotel):
- Like many historic homes, Castle Mandawa is a curious mixture of the old and the new. Medieval turreted towers, palanquin-roofed balconies, blend with modern comforts in old-world rooms. Family portraits, antique cannons and arms add to the charm of this family-run resort where tradition still runs strong. Today, the world comes to this storybook town to see its colourful frescoes on every subject under the sun, that is, ranging from the religious to the erotic; from copies of popular English prints to witty social satire, rendered in the inimitable style of the local artist. And perhaps the best place to discover the legacy of Shekhawati is from the comfort of Castle Mandawa, a fortress, now converted into a luxurious heritage hotel. Explore Castle Mandawa at your own pace. Spend a leisurely hour over a drink in the colonial verandah that accommodates the bar, or relax in the cosy comfort of the Diwankhana, the formal drawing room decorated with family portraits and an array of antique armour. ... more less
