“Very enjoyable stay”
Reviewed 11 April 2012

We arrived after a relaxed drive from Jaipur at this castle. It is most impressive and the staff was very helpfull. They had lost our reservation but then placed us in a very nice room with spectacular bath.

We had been there in January, so temperatures at night where 0-5° C and the heating was somewhat provisoric. Nevertheless the blanket where warm.

The beds where very hard!!! Fortunately we love such hard beds, but still it was our limit. The comments in the guest book of people not liking hard beds where remarkable.

The dinner and the breakfast where impeccable. During the dinner there was a show with local musicians.

We had been impressed with the gold painter who has a shop in the hotel. We recommend his art and his personality led to a very enjoyable communication!

Our one night stay in this hotel was the first in a string of Heritage hotels which were part of our 17 day Rajasthan tour (4 of us plus driver) and it was all and more than we expected, including the vast marble floored bedrooms at the end of a long climb on the outside staircase. Our four poster bed was rather hard and the floors were icy in January (we asked for and got a heater). Also, agree with the comment re the shower - the marble floor became a skating rink when wet. We wished the weather had been a little warmer as the pool looked very inviting. It was difficult to just wander and enjoy the lovely gardens without attracting a persistent shadow (one of the guards). We also found the buffet dinner overpriced and very ordinary, and from then on stuck to ordering a la carte as we found the dishes more interesting, fresher and much better value for money.

This is a very, very old castle converted into a hotel, some parts of which are spectaular whilst some are, shall we say, less impressive. Our welcome fell into the spectacular category with trumpets blazing, flags waving and mounted horses and camels ushering us in. Frankly, however some parts of the hotel have seen better days and, indeed, the bedrooms were very mixed in size, decor and facilities (we were part of a group so we could exchange notes). Ours was large with a comfortable four poster bed and a renovated bathroom; the room overlooked the swimming pool and spa which looked relatively modern.

For such a large hotel the dining and breakfast arrangements left a lot to be desired as the rooms used were cramped and hot and it was difficult to get to and from the buffet which was laid out in a sort of corridor; having said that we enjoyed the Indian food on offer although we heard some complaints about the "international" options. Service was willing but a bit hit and miss.

Mandawa is a long way from nowhere. We had a 4 hour drive from Jaipur to get there and it took nearly 8 hours to get back to New Delhi. Mandawa's only claims to fame are the Hawelis and the painted frescos which are a feature of the area.

Dear Guest, Thank you for your feedback. We have noted your observations on the different sizes of rooms. Being an old castle converted into a hotel that is part of its charm, uniformity can only come in a new building built to hotel specifications. Shekhavati as the area is known as is unique because of its frescoes in buildings and outside surfaces. it has been compared to Venice by the renowned art restorater Sir Bernard Fielden.

Mandawa is in a semi desert region and this Heritage hotel is just that. There are no modern facilities but the rooms are large, comfortable and ‘quaint’. The four poster bed was ‘rickety’ and the shower curtain allowed water on to the bathroom floor which then became like an ice rink. Our air conditioning unit was very noisy and due for the science museum but the overhead fans allowed us to get a reasonable nights sleep despite the ‘party like’ noise in the town which went on well into the night followed by the early morning call to prayers. Service was acceptable but not up to the standard we had come to expect at previous hotels. The biggest disappointment was the food which was unacceptable to some in our party.

We stayed for 4 nights during January 2012.

The Castle is ideally situated in the centre of Mandawa and our room (402) was spacious with good views over the town. The decor throughout the hotel was good while the staff were helpful and provided good recommendations as to which towns to visit within Shekhawati. Be warned, however, that the guards do expect payment for being photographed.

While we enjoyed the stay, we did think that the hotel was overpriced compared to some of the competition while the quality and range of offerings at the buffet breakfasts and dinners was not particularly good. This may in part be due to the fact that the hotel seemed to have several non-Indian tour groups staying there, so the Indian food seemed watered down while the "western" dishes were nondescript.

Official Description (provided by the hotel):
Like many historic homes, Castle Mandawa is a curious mixture of the old and the new. Medieval turreted towers, palanquin-roofed balconies, blend with modern comforts in old-world rooms. Family portraits, antique cannons and arms add to the charm of this family-run resort where tradition still runs strong. Today, the world comes to this storybook town to see its colourful frescoes on every subject under the sun, that is, ranging from the religious to the erotic; from copies of popular English prints to witty social satire, rendered in the inimitable style of the local artist. And perhaps the best place to discover the legacy of Shekhawati is from the comfort of Castle Mandawa, a fortress, now converted into a luxurious heritage hotel. Explore Castle Mandawa at your own pace. Spend a leisurely hour over a drink in the colonial verandah that accommodates the bar, or relax in the cosy comfort of the Diwankhana, the formal drawing room decorated with family portraits and an array of antique armour. ... more   less
