Its a bit of a risk going to out-of-the -way places like Shekhawati. The hotel is in a converted/restored 50% of an old fort. The other 50% ( which we were shown round by the caretaker) is unrestored . There's a big restaurant serving a buffet breakfast and a buffet or a la carte dinner. The a la carte food is pleasantly served but is nothing to write home about. Our room was huge consisting of the top chamber of that part of the castle. We had four smallish rooms and a bathroom for the two of us, with a distinctly maharajah-like feeling , down to the swing seat and two candle-lit terraces . Lovely.

But you might want to know that the rooms apparently vary a lot, and the bottom of the price range won't get you the luxury we enjoyed courtesy of our travel-agent. Some of you might find the 72 steps from the courtyard up to the room a little too much . There isn't a huge amount of individual tourism in Shekhawati ( but it will come since the painted Havelis are quite beautiful). Meantime there seemed a lot of one night coach-tour stops.

Mandawa is a pleasant place, cleaner than most and with an excellent range of Havellis to explote both inside and out. A thoroughly decent hotel with some visual charm and views thrown in.

Very nice gardens and surrounds after you go through the main gate. Very large room and would have been better with a adequate room heater as it gets cold of an evening. Good breakfast and had a guide who showed us around a few nearby havelis. Very interesting. Staff average and seem driven by the inevitable 'tip'. Had dinner at a nearby restaurant, 'Monicas', which was a good, inexpensive meal and typical Rajastani food.

Room Tip: The higher the better.

Everyone must stay in a castle once in their lifetime. Straight out of a storybook. We were 5 people in connected suites. 2 slept up and 3 down. Huge rooms..massive ornate bathrooms. Tons of windows to offer magnificent views. All in a corner turret! Staff were great...and had an unexpected tour of the empty half of the castle. For a girl looking to get on the other side of the locked doors, this was an amazing treat! Food was wonderful with a large selection. Even got to fly kites off the roof. We are on this trip in January, so could have had a much better heat source. Room was pretty chilly. Hot water a little spotty. Having said that..I would still stay there again. Overall a great experience.

Room Tip: check for heat-ask about hot water

Its a beautifull hotel hidden in a castle , walls are very intricately painted and restored , food is good , u would fidn just foreigners visiting the place with few indians only. check out the massage corner in the hotel and do explore the swimming pool and garden area.

I highly recommend a guide to take a short haveli tour near castle mandawa, hotel can arrange for it. rooms dont have tv .
