“Think cheese”
Reviewed 15 October 2011

The setting is an old wine cellar, well spaced tables yet cosy. The presentation of the meal was spectacular--simultaneous unveiling of all plates and each plate was perfectly oriented before the patron. Everything about the meal was excellent but the cheese trolley--a weakness of mine--exceeded all expectations. These weren't run-of-the-mill offerings but truly fine cheeses well explained by the host. While I can't rate the hotel since we were staying on a canal boat, I can assure you that the meal was worth all the hype I had heard about this restaurant. If you are anywhere near Accolay, you must go there.

This is an absolutely charming restaurant (I did not stay in the hotel) in rural Burgundy.

You must try the cheese plate. Yes, dinner will be delicious. Yes, the wine list is quite nice. However, nothing is so civilized as the cheese plate. Monsieur carefully wheels his cheese trolley (the chariot de fromages) and personally serves you. He'll explain where his cheeses originate, and make recommendations, pairings and suggest a flight of cheeses worthy of a sommelier. It's worth the trip just for the cheese!

Looks unimpressive from the street and sits in a pretty, old but otherwise barely-worth-stopping town on the canal and river Cure. It's on the train line (local train from Auxerre).

Rooms functional, and a little dated, but fine. Most overlook a secluded garden where you can sit and enjoy a drink.

Breakfast & breakfast room is bland - but you're not there for breakfast!

Dinner is not expensive but is excellent. The restaurant was full as, I suspect, it's a local secret. The staff were perfect (I don't say that often). The cheeseboard was the best I've seen (it's my speciality) and all local. Monsieur serves it himself - it's clearly his hobby and his passion. He encouraged you/me to eat more, not less.
