“Spending Time Here is Worth The Money!!!”
Reviewed 29 May 2012

Just got back from Bird View. Wow....Great view of the mountains from the resort, I guess one of the best from any in Kasauli (and this is what we were looking for, away from the bustling city).

The resort is about 02 Km's away from proper Kasauli town so having your own set of wheels is important ,otherwise there is a local bus which stops hourly by the hotel. The day we checked in, the resort had organized a jazz musical night which went late into the evening.....we enjoyed a lot...check with the resort before you book for any similar programs taking place.

The Room was spacious and very friendly staff...took care in making sure the guests were well looked after. Food was decent, we tried multiple cuisines and it was OK on the taste buds. If you have toddlers/young kids with you they will get bored pretty fast as the resort doesn't have a lot of activities for them so make sure you carry some thing for them to keep them busy.

Bathrooms were clean (we found a big grasshopper, a local wildlife guest :) on one of towels so make sure you check them before using them) ; a piece of advice, watch your step as the bathroom ledge can be treacherous. Cell phone reception is sporadic.

Great place if you want to be marooned on the mountains, enjoy the view and take a break from day to day city life. Food and other items are a little on the expensive side so make sure you book a good package with the resort.

Room Tip: If you are a light sleeper, avoid room below the terrace.

The only thing commendable about this property, unfortunately, is the view they provide from the balcony of their room!! Food was not good, service was not good, unnecessarily expensive. No phone network works anywhere in the property; you have to walk outside the hotel to talk. Imagine you need to talk at night; it is extremely chilling in January (especially this year - 2012). The heater they provided was not effective. To actually feel the heat, we had to sit within 2 feet of the heaters proximity. The rooms, too, are basic; they're big though! We cut our stay short to just 1 night looking at all these issues.

Room Tip: Orange room

Respected Sir,

Apologies for the really delayed response …. Anyhow sir I can see that you planned your vacation all the way from Mumbai to Kasauli & out of all the other accommodations you chose to stay at Birds View & unfortunately you weren't really pleased with your decision.

Thanks for your honest opinion & for appreciating our view … haven’t come across many who appreciate things even after a bitter experience …
I agree with you on the food part as our chef at that time was battling his own personal issues (none of a customer’s concern- thought I’d just mention it) but to be honest I didn’t like his food myself !!

The issue with the insulation in the rooms …. Coming from a mild place to an extremely cold environment in the dead of winter when it usually snows … heating with an electric heater can be futile …. The only thing that really helps is an oil heater or a fireplace which unfortunately we do not implement … On the contrary our property is one of the few places in the area to be facing the sunny side or Sothern slopes… we get the full arc of the sun from dawn to dusk while other places cease to get the sun after 3 pm in fact Birds View is paradise in the monsoons, autumn, winter & spring…. Summers can get warm & crowded.

Once again the inconvenience is regretted & whenever you plan your next trip this side do make sure you visit Birds View… we have improved manifold, our food quality, type of cuisines offered have notched up in fact we are shortly opening a Bar, Café & Grill + our interiors have improved too so hopefully if we have an opportunity to host you in the near future you’ll find many changes & improvements overall & hopefully leave with a smile … so do give us another opportunity to host you soon!

Regards,
Harkaran Gill

Visited in October "season", was easily available

Positives:
1. Great view, large balcony from most room.....just and chill or click photos..this was a big criteria for us and full marks to Bird View on this...
2. Nice roof top area
3. Reasonable price
4. Large size rooms
5. Friendly staff and good service

Not so great:
1. Food was below average and arrived slow....full marks for their effort and the "cook" tried his best to cater to our taste...but somehow could never get it right..
2. Location is 3-4km "before" Kasauli on old kasauli road and so to go into town is an effort and self transport is must have....especially an issue since no other choice of food other than the hotel's kitchen (there was no restaurant per se)
3. Average decor, furniture, bath facilities....2 star level
4. No way is this a "resort" ...at best a nice "inn"...

I stayed with my wife and another couple at the Bird View for a night during a long weekend getaway at Kasauli (also stayed subsequent night at the Kasauli Regency, see review as well) in September 2011. The location is excellent, miles from anything and anyone else, perched on the valley-side. We loved the view, the total quiet (there was absolutely no sound during the evenings) and the green serenity of the surroundings, best enjoyed from the balconies or from the huge, open rooftop area (which overlooks the valley without any obstructions). The rooms are quite spacious and have good views by themselves. However, the facilities are a bit of a let-down- the rooms have very basic furnishing, the baths are of average cleanliness, the beddings could do with some airing and some sun, and for folk who do not enjoy insect-life (I enjoy insect photography!) there is the disincentive of having millions of insects clustering around the lights at night-time (thankfully none in the rooms apart from the stray mosquito). The food is average, the service speed on par with the laid-back feel of the place, and the folk a bit brusque and there is nothing as such to 'do'. Inspite of the location, there were hardly any birds to be spotted at all (I know the name refers to the birds-eye view, but given the quiet surrounds I expected more as an avid birder!). In summation- great for using as a base for roaming in Kasauli and Shimla, but not a romantic getaway or luxury chilling out!

Room Tip: Choose the valley-facing rooms, as high-up as possible

Reviewed 7 November 2011

We visited this place in the Diwali week of October. We had four nights available to us, and we needed a place that was away from the hustle and bustle, and in the hills. After looking at the Tripadvisor reviews, we decided to spend 2 nights at Bird View, and another 2 nights at Kasauli Resort, ranked #1. We first went to Bird View, thinking it has so few reviews, so it may turn out to be a mixed experience, whereas Kasauli Resort is so well known and highly ranked. We wanted to leave Kasauli with the best experience, which we expected to be at Kasauli Resort.

The car from Kalka station did not take the usual route to Kasauli, and instead turned into a narrower road, locally called the Sector-4 road. After a bumpy ride of 45 min, we arrived suddenly at an innocuous looking property round the bend, which the driver told us is our destination. It had no airs around it, a simple looking place, and appeared deserted at 3 pm. We went to the reception, and a little later someone ambled towards us to assist us with the registration. We saw the big and beautiful restaurant by the side of reception, and the wonderful view of the hills stretched before us. We had taken a cottage, so we had to go down 3 floors.

The cottage is integrated with the building, and the rooms are in the floors above. So, it is not really a cottage, but a 3 sides open large room, equipped with a kitchen that is stocked with utensils for cooking. There is a queen size bed, and two divans, with a separator curtain between the bed and the divans. If you are going with teenager kids, or with in-laws, there is a flimsy separation between the different people while sleeping. The curtains are blue with the room in a mostly brown decor, so a little awkward color scheme, but not unpleasant. The furniture is new but has a look of the older generations, so we liked it. There is also a dining table that can seat 6.

Come out of the cottage to the terrace where there is a jhoola to seat 2 people. And few feet from the jhoola is the railing, and then the beautiful hill view. We were mesmerized, and kept sitting there in silence for several minutes. There was no sound anywhere, perfect silence, so it was just us and Nature together. There were not many guests in that week, and the resort doesn’t have a lot of rooms, so that contributed to the peace. Our magic spell was broken by our hunger pangs, so we went back to our room, and ordered room service.

The food came in a reasonable time, so I would give good marks to service. It was hot, very homely, and not the standard oily hotel stuff. The servings could have been larger, but it was not bad either. We were thrilled to get good food in a place like this. When the plates were cleared, the boy was leaving without getting any bills signed. I asked him what if there were differences later since we had initially ordered some dishes which were unavailable. The rustic boy answered simply, “There will be no differences. And even if you tell us during billing that you have not received a certain dish, we will believe you and take the dish off the bill.” Wow! That is faith all right. I would like to record that we always ordered room service, I never signed bills, and the final bill was exact. I never had to argue about a single item. The resort staff were very polite and forever ready to accommodate.

There are two minor gripes with the resort. First, they don’t have generator backup. Granted, power failures are not that frequent in Himachal, still that night we were left in darkness for 30-40 minutes, which some inverter/generator backup could have avoided. Secondly, there is no exhaust in the bathroom.

Overall, we liked Birds View Resort better than Kasauli Resort (which I am also going to review), for its peace and solitude, and we will certainly like to go back some time soon.

Room Tip: Cottage is 3 sides open so good, but you have to walk a few steps to the terrace where the view is...
