I booked a few nights here for the APEC holiday in Beijing back in November, 2014. Agoda charged me $60 and sent me the email, you know the deal.
But then when I tried contacting the hostel, no one responded. So I was unable to get an airport pickup. Kashi is pretty remote; it's less China than anywhere else in the country. So my mandarin was nearly useless when I tried getting a cab to the hostel. After asking directions from several people, the cabbie finally dropped me off in a dingy street. I found the hostel, but it was closed up.
A friendly Uighur woman showed me how to open the door, and I got in. There was one old woman who did not understand my Chinese. When I showed her the photo of the reservation email on my iPad, she got confused and began offering an empty dorm room in broken English. I explained, slowly and carefully, that I'd booked a private room. She got more confused and a little angry. She barked at what sounded like an even older man in another room "with Internet in there" and he had no idea about any Agoda payment.
In the end, I lost my money and caught a cab to a pricey international hotel, where they understood how Internet purchases work.More
