“This is not your usual hotel stay”

The hotel has a spectacular location overlooking the valley. It is an enjoyable 90 minute walk from St. Luc. If you enjoy history, you will like the fascinating old building but if you prefer modern luxuries, this is probably not a place for you. The rooms are comfortable although small but showers and toilets are shared and very basic (bring your own shampoos - there is no amenities in this hotel). From this aspect, the price seems rather high. Dinner was included and on our visit was cooked and served by ex-Raffles Cambodia staff. This was a first-class experience, one of the best meals experienced in Switzerland with exceptionally attentive and accommodating service. Overall, the place is definitely worth a visit but with the expectation that you will go back in time - including the provisions.

Room Tip: Ask for room facing the valley - corner room even more special.

The hotel is 600 m higher than St. Luc, min. 90 minutes' walk, on > 2350 m elevation. More than 100 years old, it tells you how the English High Society, for which it was originally built, traveled. Much is renovated, but the architecture is retained. The shower facilities are towards one end of the corridor, the WC's are between the stores at the central stairway. We had a spectacular corner room, which is comfortable and quite large. Original plank floors in the rooms and the corridors which just by nature make heard every step you make. People come to see the view, which indeed is abslutely spectacular. If you are lucky, ask for a corner room, 2nd choice would be a room facing the valley. Dinner is included in the price, and it is almost as spectacular and well prepared as the view you can enjoy. Also the service we could enjoy was impeccable.

Room Tip: The upgrades corner room are worth the price!

Historic hotel with great views. Although definitely not worth the price (chf 140 per person) - while you get less than what you can get in a hut. And the historic charm definitely dors not outweigh an average dinner, the shower/toilet in the hall and super small rooms with almost no privacy. We should have stayed at Cabane Bella Tolla instead!

Three of us stayed here while doing the Haute Walkers' Route from Chamonix to Zermatt. All the guidebooks say it's an experience not to be missed, and they're right! The hotel dates from 1882 and until a few years ago was almost unaltered. Some of the refurbishments (modernised dining-room, fire escape) slightly detract from the charm but there's still plenty of the latter left. We shared an adequate room (double plus single bed): no TV, and the showers/loos at the other end of the corridor (much squeaking of floorboards in the middle of the night). Dinner and breakfast pretty good considering there is only a dirt road up from the valley (not many years ago the hotel was supplied by mule-train). Wonderful old-fashioned lounge and smoking-room. Well worth a visit! (The "value" rating reflects the current strength of the Swiss franc).

To find a hotel in the alps with unspoild nature, historic background and some 2300 meters above sea level you have to come here. The place is unique. If it wouldn't be a hotel it would be a museum: Two centuries ago British and other distingushed society used to go up there on the back of mules. Also today there is no other transport, then hiking yourself. Once in you room you really feel out of time.
