Recently renovated interior, same great ramen. A good selection of ramen broth to choose from. The hakata ramen was delicious. Can cater for kids with their mini ramen. They also offer udon, some sushi/sashimi, bento and the regular sides one might expect from Japanese cuisine eg. Tempura, karaage, agedashi tofu. Reasonable value - ramen specials are under $10, non - specials range up to $15. Satisfying!

This restaurant has been renovated - nicer and brighter. It retained the Japanese menu, alas, the food did not match. I think the owners have changed and it's not very authentic Japanese anymore.

Disappointing in terms of taste... a bowl of noodle is between $15 - $20 if you upsize to include salad and gyoza / takoyaki.

We have been going to Zenya since more than 10 years ago, always been our go to Japanese Ramen place when we feel like something near by.

The restaurant has been in renovation for a while and it was just reopened, happened to be in Eastwood with my teenage son, went in to see what's new.

What. A. Disappointment.

Upon walking into the restaurant, there was a strange smell, yes, it's the smell of used oil, one you can always smell in a corner Chinese restaurant.

Looked around the restaurant, none of the waiting staff were the one used to serve us, and none of them seemed like Japanese. You can always tell the quality of food when a Japanese restaurant operated by Japanese people.

The few we also go to in Chatswood are operated by Japanese, THEY ARE GOOD.

Either of myself or my son is a big eater so we ordered Teriyaki Chicken Ramen to share, which was something we always did, he also ordered an apple juice.

Apple juice came and it was not just a bottle of juice, it was an apple juice with cartoon characters (Thomas the Tank Engine), my son was so embarrassed, he had to peel the label off under the table. And the juice was so sweet, he could not go further after the first sip.

The ramen came, the broth was almost just above room temperature, it was way too sweet and did not have the thickness as it used to. The ramen did not have the same texture as before and while the price was the same, the size was almost half.

We quickly finished it and when we get the bill, we were told by the lady with Chinese accent that there was a surcharge for payment less than $35 for EFTPOS and you could not pay by card. $35?? That's ridiculously high. We had to pay by cash at the end. Not because of the amount of the surcharge, we really did not feel like we should be paying for it.

I'm sure we will never set foot in this restaurant ever again.

Returned to the restaurant and impressed with the new layout. Significantly improved.
The food was also good, staff were friendly and prices were good.

It was easy to get a table and we were very happy with the meal.

Highly recommend this new layout.

Hadn't been here for some time, but went there again recently. In the restaurants defence we did not have a reservation, but they found a spot for us quickly. The waitress was very pleasant and took our order efficiently - but unfortunately it went down hill from there - we did not see our waitress again that evening.

We ordered noodles and some sushi and teriyaki chicken. The noodle dish came and the noodle were inedible - simply awful - and they are a noodle house. The sushi came along together with another side that we ordered and it was, to say they least - only just average.

A bowl of rice came for the teriyaki chicken - but where was the chicken?

We had seen other tables not get there food and the manager lady go and apologise and say it was an error in the kitchen - so we saw 1 couple where one person had finished when the other meal arrived.

Eventually, this manger lady came and said she hadn't sent the chicken as she thought we may not want it as we may have had enough to eat. Now, I ask you, is that her decision or mine - we were both really hungry and she told us she could get it for us in 10-15 minutes . Was this so we could enjoy it with the cold rice?

We told them to forget it, paid our bill and left.

When we paid he bill we mentioned we were disappointed and we were told they had just had a grand re-opening and they were short on food. Is that our problem - they are a restaurant.

Is it the manager lady's place to decide if I had eaten enough or not? Does she know how hungry people are?

My advice is if you want good noodles or good food give Zenya a miss. If a noodle bar cannot get noodles right, what hope Is there? There are so many noodle places in Eastwood.

We walked out hungry and we will not be back. A huge disappointment. To be frank, I found the food awful and the service rude and arrogant with the exception of our initial waitress.

(A final comment - we went after this to a new coffee shop in Eastwood and had a coffee and something to eat and the attitude, service, coffee and food were great and we probably would not have gone there if it was not for the fact we did not get enough food at Zenya. We will write a separate review on the coffee shop).
