I stayed as part of a large group, which they were great at accommodating. It's definitely not a new building, but maintained well enough and they provided plenty of kerosene heaters to keep it warm despite the lack of insulation you should come to expect if you spend long in Japan. The common areas are great, although the steps down to the second building can be treacherous and it's really annoying to have to take your shoes on and off going between the buildings. I would recommend trying to get a room in the main building with a western-style room. I didn't find the futons comfortable at all and had trouble sleeping, but I think they are considered average quality for that style of accommodation in Japan. Just doesn't work for me. It's not right on the slopes so be prepared to walk a bit or drive/get a ride to the lifts.
Overall, it was a good experience and a good deal, but I can't give it five stars. The management was exceptionally friendly, but that was the only part that exceeded expectations, so that's why I rated it this way.

Room tip: Choose a room in the main building to avoid taking your shoes off and on a million and twelve times. However, it's definitely quieter in that building, so if that's priority and you don't mind the shoe thing, go for that one. I think the top floor of the main hotel is fairly quiet as well, though. Also if you're not used to futons, I don't recommend getting all romantic about them and trying them out... they're not comfortable for those of us used to nice fluffy pillow-top mattresses.
