Spent 4 days and nights here and loved every second, great hotel in a lovely location with staff that were very friendly and accommodating. Rooms are perfect base for a few days snowboarding with a number of local mountains to choose from you could spend weeks here and not get bored.
Food was excellent at the hotel but also plenty of choice down in the main town.

Double black is a ski hotel nestled in a beautiful and peaceful Japanese forest setting. Owned ostensibly by Australian interests, language is not an issue for the English speaking traveler, as nearly all the staff speak English fluently (most of them are either Australian or native English speakers); this is a great help when it comes to booking restaurants or activities outside the hotel - something which the staff are only too willing to do for you. Not that there is anything wrong with the food in the hotel, it is of the highest five star quality and a must for a few nights in, but sampling the local food in the many nearby restaurants is an experience well worth having.

This was my second stay at Double Black (which speaks for itself) and I found the staff to be super helpful, efficient and a lot of fun. In the morning they run a continuous shuttle bus service to the main ski-lift locations and, in the afternoon, they do a scheduled pickup from the same points - all free of charge (which supplements the local shuttle bus service). All you have to do is pick which ski area you want to ski from day to day; the local free shuttle bus fills in the areas the hotel service doesn't cover.

And, after a hard day's skiing, the hotel has gents and ladies separate onsens (genuine Japanese style) for those who are not too shy; bathroom facilities are western style (including those fantastic high-tech Japanese toilets).

I heartily recommend Double Black to all skiers, Aussies in particular.

Room Tip: Rooms ate the front of the hotel have slightly better views.

The wonderful breakfasts and very helpful staff who willingly shuttled us to bus stops and ski slopes (but not back, sadly) and then to the train station at the end of our stay, were the highlights of our stay in this comfortable hotel set in the woods.
The place reminded me of an upmarket chalet in the Alps – the staff are young and enthusiastic, and probably in Hakuba to enjoy the slopes rather than anything else, and that probably explains why the bathroom was not entirely spotless.
We ate dinner in the restaurant on one night, and while the food was delicious we spent more on that meal than on any other during our two weeks in Japan. We only had a main dish each and shared a side dish, the portions were on the small side and despite being told that one dish came with rice or mashed potato, it did not and there were no carbs to order either.
We would stay again and would recommend the Double Black.

Nice clean rooms , great friendly staff, good breakfast to start the day off and a good bar to have a few beers at the end of the day

They offer a shuttle service that will drop you off ( unfortunately they don't come and pick you up )most places within a reasonable distance, gondola, pub, etc and transfer to and from train/ bus

Free onsen in the hotel which is great to jump into after a day on the slopes which can also be booked for private use after 6 pm

If you are looking for a night out in Hakuba Mura an evening at Double Black Hotel will not disappoint. A truly sensational meal. Chefs from Sydney have bought an incredible dining experience to Hakuba and if you are not staying at Double Black Hotel make sure you come here for dinner and drinks, inside tip - they also serve the best espresso martini's! Loved the entire experience of enjoying a fabulous meal with friends in one of the Worlds best ski destinations.
