My family (2 adults and 2 kids, 9 and 12 yr old) have spent our Chinese New Year break skiing in Goryu at Hotel Montblanc; we selected this hotel after reading several recent reviews of very high standard service.
All reviews were just spot on. The hotel is well located, staff are super helpful and go out of their way to help. They accomodate private pick ups and drop offs within Goryu whenever possible for free and with a smile on their faces. This Japanese hotel has a nice Brazilian community within staff givin it more charm and easiness of communication with non Japanese customers.
We would rdefinitely stay there again if we are to go back skiin in Hakuba Goryu.

I have been on many skiing trips in Japan and this would have to be one of the worst places.
The place is quite run down, and the rooms are quite small. They tried to fit us in a room that is too small so one of us had to sleep in the closet.
The breakfast and dinner that is included are the worst meals I've had in Japan. The dishes are small and they only served us western style Japanese food. They really need to replace the chef.
The dry room is tiny and all the gear cannot fit it it properly.
The shared bath house is super tiny. You can't even street your legs in the tub.
The stairs outside are icy and super slippery. Everyone just kept falling over.
The staff kept making mistakes and they were very rude when they try to fix the problems that they created themselves.

This was our first trip to Hakuba, so we did not know the area, due to this we chose the Mont Blanc hotel as it stated it was Ski to Door on booking.com. It most definitely isn’t, which was disappointing. Although it is well positioned, only a short walk to the slopes ~600 metres (half up hill) or a free shuttle ride, but we didn’t like the false advertisement.

The Bad:

- Breakfast is form 07:00 - 08:30, this may not be a negative, but for us we won’t be a the ski lifts when they open and so don’t like to be rushed when on holiday, having to set an alarm to make in downstairs to be able to have breakfast wasn’t good. We also felt uneasy when it got close to 08:30 as though we were overstaying our welcome in the breakfast room.

- The small bathroom smelt constantly. We left the extractor fan on but it still smelt and had to keep the bathroom door shut to stop the smell from overtaking the room.

- Not a lot of storage space or a wardrobe.

- Safe in the room didn’t open.

The Good:

- Plenty of hot water - which is great after a days skiing, there was plenty of water for the bath

- Good customer service - the staff were very helpful, pick up and drop off at the bus stop and took us too the shops on our first night. After that there is a free shuttle which leaves every 30 minutes from 18:30 - 20:30 to the outdoor onsen and 7-11.

- Washer and dryer on site - this was great for washing our gear before leaving, the washer is free and dryer was 100 yen/30 minutes.

- Discounted lift passes and ski rental.

- Good drying room.

- Lockers for valuables (300 yen per use).

- In room fridge.

- Good room heater.

- Plenty of vending machines for drinks and a small selection of food items at the front desk.

Overall the hotel is quite dated and in need of renovation but it was comfortable enough for our stay, for the proximity to the slopes its is good value. It is in keeping with its 2 star rating on booking.com (I don’t agree with the 3 star rating in TripAdvisor due to the facilities and room being dated.).

I would recommend the hotel for backpackers, school/college trips or anyone on a budget but if you like you creature comforts you may want to look else where.

Hotel Mont Blanc is ideally situated and well priced. But the thing that sets it above all others is the wonderful friendly and helpful staff. Souza and Kenji were always available with help and advice. They were amazingly generous with their offers to take us to any local place we needed to go (including a late night trip to the local Kmart equivalent) and gave clear instructions on how to make our way to other places further afield. All our skiing was so easy with their help.
I will definitely be back.
