I was extremely sad to leave the next day as we had only booked it for 1 night. They provide excellent service, are all very friendly and warm. If you want a real Japanese experience then this is it.
The room: we had a traditional style ryokan room which had a large bathroom and separate toilet.
The ‘Livingroom’ had a table with a hot water dispenser and tea box. There was a large table and a cat seat (to cute). The second room was a seating area with western chars and a small coffee table. There where yukatas and slippers laid out for you. And while you are at dinner they move the big table and place the futons and a ice cold mineral water dispenser and clean yukatas for the next day. During breakfast at the morning they will put away the futons for you.
The onsen: clean, beautiful, and open 24/7. There are private onsen available for rent. I have tattoo’s and aksed if I can use the public bath. They said it to be no problem but if I want I can put a plaster over them to not upset any other customers. They gave me waterproof plasters at reception.
Dinner/Breakfast: make sure to be hungry as both dinner and breakfast are very large (dinner was 10 courses) beautiful presented and delicious! For breakfast they give you the option for a traditional Japanese one and a Western Style. If you like fish in the mornings, do try the Japanese style!
Location: beautiful area, and a 1.8km walk to the snow monkeys. The walk is through a beautiful forest and takes about 20-30 minutes. They have a shuttle bus going from and to the nearby local train station if you need it. Please ask at reception for details.
The hotel in general: I cannot praise it enough. There is a free coffee and tea room where you can relax and enjoy the gardens. They have a shop within the hotel where they sell Japanese souvenirs and things made in the region. In the mornings farmers sell fresh fruit such as peaches and grapes.

We thoroughly enjoyed our stay. A short walk to see the snow monkeys complete with gumboots provided by the hotel. Fantastic service and a great dining experience. We had an enormous Japanese style room with our own hot bath. Highly recommended.

We only managed to stayed one night as it was booked out. Nice onsen, room and food.. There is a cosy coffee lounge (free flow coffee or tea ) overlooking a courtyard garden. There is even a heated Swimming pool.

This place has really nice Onsen and it is also the closest hotel to the Snow Monkey Park - to access the park is it however 1,6 km path (one way) everyone visiting the place have to walk.

The lobby of the hotel looks like people's hall somewhere in China - large and grand in old fashioned way. However the rooms are better than in many other ryokans. The dinner was served on second floor restaurant and was not the finest kaiseki dinner bit at least there was enough of small plates to get even a westerner full.

The best part of the ryokan was the onsen: large indoor pool and very attractive outside pool.

This elegant hotel is a special treat if you want to experience an upmarket, formal traditional onsen hotel. From the moment you step into the expansive foyer overlooking the gardens a sense of calm prevails. Rooms are traditional with tatami mats and futons. Our room had private bathroom. Yukata are provided for guests to wear while at the hotel. The extensive set menu has over 10 courses, offering the chance to sample many traditional and local specialities you might not otherwise order. Fussy eaters might not enjoy this quite so much. Everything is presented with great care and exquisite detail. There are two public onsen baths and two private baths (wood onsen or stone onsen) you can reserve for a small fee of ¥1500 per person for 45 mins. The onsen all have an indoor and outdoor bath in our case we could soak in the hot springs surrounded by snow.
Location is perfect for visiting the snow monkeys. This is the closest hotel to the start of the monkey park trail so no need to organize transfers, just walk on over (and beat the crowds). The hotel has a complimentary shuttle to and from Yudanaka station at set times.
