“A little gem in Downings”
Reviewed 26 July 2011

This welcoming little hotel sits snugly in the heart of Downings village and is right next the beach. In fact this is literally just yards away. There is plenty of parking and the amenities of this lovely little village are right on the doorstep. It's also a short stroll to the picturesque harbour and the great little cafe at McNutts. Baking here is done on the premises and the scones are not to be missed!

The Bay Hotel has all the comforts of grander establishments but none of the pretensions. Rooms are very spacious and attractively furnished. The decor throughout is bright, fresh, contemporary and clean. The restaurant is fairly priced with a good menu. Breakfast choice was very good with a buffet of cereals, juices and breads, then a cooked breakfast to order. This was lovely and portions were generous. The bar food was also great value and there was loads to choose from, including daily specials. Dishes were always attractively served and the service was fast and efficient even during busy spells. The wheaten bread is made on the premises and is very popular with guests. It has a distinctive flavour, due to its 'secret' ingredient - Guinness!!!!

While there is no pool/spa facility in the hotel there is a great facility within easy driving distance up the hill. This is complimentary to hotel guests. The pool here is enormous and all the one depth. There is also a sauna, steam room, jacuzzi and gym.

The hotel staff were friendly and helpful, particularly the servers in the dining room and bar. This is a hotel with a very homely feel. We would definitely use it again.
In fact we can't wait to get back!

Booked this hotel for our 29th Anniversary, the hotel has been refurbished and rooms were very comfortable, but it lacked atmosphere, we spent our two evenings up at the Harbour Bar which was great!
Also Leisure Centre was not connected to the hotel which was dissapointing.
We booked the Restaurant for our Anniversary meal which was fantastic, unfortunately there was only one other couple in at the same time and we felt that the senior female staff member was a bit abrupt with us!

Breakfast ,bar food and restaurant food very good, staff were very friendly and relaxed. Bedroom was spotless and thought the purple snacks were a nice treat in the rooms, would definitely stay here on our next trip, also stayed on second floor and there was no street noise.

Room Tip: Go for the second floor

Have just returned from this hotel which was booked last minute for a quiet getaway as i two kids under 4. This hotel was booked through Late Rooms in a hurry and then i started to read reviews and was very apprehensive (even tried to cancel) because of all the comments about the noise, but i have to say this was one of the nicest hotels i have stayed in. The rooms were spotless, staff friendly and the bar food amazing. We had asked for a quiet room and were put in room 120, never heard a sound all night not from the nite club or the bar which had entertainment in it. This is not a hotel for those with airs and graces it is what i call a "Hi, How are ya" hotel you won't get sir or madam but will get local friendly staff who will chat away to you.

The only down side for me was the pool. It is not in the hotel but 5min away in a leisure center but you get a free pass from the hotel, still we never tried it was enjoyinf the bar too much.

This hotel was a suprise to us and have even enquired about bringing our kids next time as it seem very family friendly and the beach is just behind the hotel.
