Road side stalls that sell curd and honey.
Certificate of Excellence
Cuisines: Fast food
Description: These Road side stalls sell Unique buffalo milk curd served with treacle or honey. This is probiotic. It is so delicious that I would like to introduce it to all fellow tourists travelling to Sri Lanka. The curd is prepared in earthern pots . I have some lovely pictures of these that I can post.

Curd & honey is a traditional dessert, snack in the deep south of Sri Lanka. The quality is arguably the best in the island. It is a tasty treat (compulsary for those with a sweet tooth) By purchasing from a road side stall, you could be helping small holders rather than large corporates who stock the same stuff in supermarkets in town! It will be fresher too!

The cleanliness at these cafes was questionable. However, as most of these were family run and catered to workers, they were most conveniently located near shops and on the highways.

Be careful what kind of curd you eat. It is said that if it is too sour, it's not fresh. Always insist on seeing the curd in it's clay jar. If it looks yellowish it's old. Fresh curd is less sour and creamy white. Roadside stores are often in the sun so getting your curd early in the morning is best. A great place to try curd is at Sunil Garden Guest House in Unawatuna and Elephant Camp Guesthouse in Tissamaharama.

On the road between Matara and Ella you can find several roadside stalls selling Buffalo milk curd with coconut treacle. The curd is made in earthenware pots. As it is pro biotic in nature it never makes you sick. Eating the thick, sweet and cold curd is a truly delightful experience.
