“Ullswater Retreat”
Reviewed 28 August 2012

Having had this hotel recommended by friends , we paid our first visit to Rampsbeck House and we were not disapointed. The location on the lake side is stunning. We had a room with a lake view which was wonderful inspite of the almost constant rain over the bank holiday weekend ! We ate the first evening in the hotel restaurant and the cuisine was exceptionally good.
The second night we ate at the nearby pub and it was well below average , never again !!
The hotel breakfast menue is fantastic , spoilt for choice. Staff at the Rampsbeck were first class in every way making our first visit here a very enjoyable experience.

Room Tip: Go for a room with a lakeside view

First impressions very good with friendly efficient reception - indeed the front of house staff cannot be faulted throughout the hotel.

We had a side lake view medium priced room (£250 per couple per night dbb). It was very comfortable and well appointed - I have never slept on a nicer bed. Housekeeping is immaculate. Modern bathroom, flat screen TV and free internet. The public rooms are very comfortable and the gardens are beautiful.

We were disappointed by the food though bearing in mind previous reviews and the AA rosettes. Have they changed chefs? Definitely cuisine lourde rather than cuisine legere. That however is a matter of taste of course. What I found difficult to understand was the massive amounts of salt used. We are not talking about proper seasoning here - indeed I think a chef should season their food. But soup, starter and main course all left a taste of salt which even a dessert and an expresso could not dissipate. I drank four full glasses of water to try to get through the meal. We overheard another guest saying their food was very salty. And when we went into the bar for our coffee, we overheard the staff saying that the guests were drinking alot of water! I think the management need to do a secret guest review and taste the food themselves.

Dear Hopeful-guest,
Thank you for taking the time to write a review on your recent stay with us.
We are delighted to read that you found the Front of House team to be friendly and efficient and also that you found the House-keeping to be immaculate, it is lovely to pass on comments lke yours to our House -keepers who do hard work behind the scenes, thank you.

We are sorry to read that you found the food to be disappointing, we take all of our guests comments very seriously and we do appreciate it when guests take the time and effort to comment on their meal. Our chefs do take great care in the seasoning of the food and it is unusual for guests to find their food to be salty, in fact, some guests even put additional salt on their meal. !
Once again thank you for all of your comments,
Kind regards
Sonya

My wife and I had the pleasure of being married at Rampsbeck last week. The venue could not have been more perfect and anyone reading this with the intention of having a small to medium sized wedding should not hesitate to contact Tracey, the General Manager, and get it booked before the secret gets out and the waiting list gets longer! The service was outstanding and the food was as good as our guests and ourselves have ever eaten. To top it all off in this Summer of indifferent weather, the sun shone from dawn to dusk. You know it cant get any better when you are told "...the patio area is now available for your exclusive use Sir..." I can't imagine that many people get to perform their speeches with a backdrop of the North Cumbria fells and Ullswater glistening in the heat haze. Thanks to all the management and staff who did our guests and us proud and we hope to be back soon when our, as yet unmarried friends, wise up and sign up!

Room Tip: Ask for a lake view.

We look forward to seeing you both again on your first anniversary, if not before.!
Once again on behalf of all at Rampsbeck I would like to wish you both a long and happy life together.

We spent a wonderful weekend at the Rampsbeck about three years ago and thought it would be the perfect place to break our journey home from the Highlands to Norfolk. We were not disappointed.

The White Knot room was as glorious as we remembered, although some refurbishing has been done this simply maintains the standard. The hotel is in an enviable position with stunning view of the lake and mountainside, which the private balcony takes advantage of. We did however find the mattress a little too soft. The staff are very friendly and helpful.

We were looking forward to our dinner with great anticipation, remembering some superb meals at our last visit. The food was wonderful although we do feel that maybe chef is trying a little too hard now, a lot of ‘froth’ and overly fancy combinations. After our first visit to the hotel we often recommended it, commenting that the restaurant was worthy of Michelin Star status, however one now wonders if in an attempt to gain such accreditation the original natural and uncomplicated yet first class quality of food is being compromised.

We find Rampsbeck to be a haven of quality, peace and great standards. Please do not change too much.

Room Tip: Very soft mattress. White knot Room has private balcony ove looking the lake.

Dear Travelcouple13,
Thank you for posting a review on Trip Advisor.
Many thanks for all your comments regarding your overnight stay with us, all of which as per usual will be discussed at our next Management meeting.
White Knott is a lovely room with glorious views over Ullswater and it is one of the three balcony rooms that we have, it is just a shame that we cannot order the sunshine to go with the balcony rooms isn't it !
Regarding the comments about our chefs trying a little too hard, after speaking to Chef his reply was that he and his team do try to keep up with the trends of modern fine dining, however your comments were welcome and he will try to keep any over enthusiasm in check. Also it is worth a mention that as stated in our menus because all of our dishes are cooked to order they can be cooked to your requirements, please do just mention at time of ordering.
Thanks again for all of your comments.
Best wishes,
Sonya

During the past fifteen years or so my wife and I have stayed three times at the Rampsbeck - each occasion has been wonderful with perfect and unpretentious service, excellent food and beautiful rooms. On one hand it appears that nothing changes but on the other hand everything is new; wifi that works and a recently re-decorated room were welcome additions for our most recent visit. It is a lovely place at which to celebrate the milestones in your life. We are looking forward to our next visit!
