Hovingham is a great place for an amble around the Ebor way and local woodland and hills. This pub is the perfect stopping point for a great meal. Very friendly, and large portions of tasty pub grub.

The Malt Shovel is a fantastic local pub, Brilliantly kept ales, a wonderful menu with very generous portion sizes, the home made pies are delicious (huge) and reasonably priced. The Landlord was welcoming both to us and our 4 pawed companion. We'll be sure to pay another visit. Thank you.

Martin's pub is a great addition to the area. It's ideal for just a drink and a chat or for a memorable meal - with the best pub-grub for miles around.

We turned up for lunch at the Malt Shovel last week during the snowy period. We were the only customers. No hot lunches were available but Stuart kindly made us up some sandwiches which were delicious. When Martin arrived back from collecting some fuel for the fire we had a long catch up chat - we know Martin from his days at the Star at Harome.

All in all, the 'Shovel' is a stereotypical friendly Yorkshire pub with a lovely ambience, and offers travellers everything they could reasonably need - I believe the pies are to die for, all at a very reasonable price.
