“we will be back!!”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 23 July 2012

we have just returned today from a long weekend break here. we were delighted upon check in to be told that we would be in an upgraded chalet... yess!! so, first of all, let me explain something to anyone thinking of booking. the renovation work will be finished in march 2013.. this resort is huge so of course a major renovation programme takes time. one half of the resort is open and the other is closed so if you know that then you know what to expect. one newly renovated part has just been opened up (hence our upgrade) and the rooms look fantastic! only one pool is open and the beach bar is closed but we weren't bothered 'cos the beach is fantastic and we filled our mini bar up with beer/cold drinks etc. oh yeah, the beach front chalets really are beach front so if you nip to the duty free shop and get some supplies in your fridge then you really won't miss the beach bar at all!! i wasn't keen on the pool that was open (one with slide) because my kids kept cutting their feet on the rugged rock area but i appreciate that is up to us to stop them climbing up onto it. also, i felt that the pool bar was very expensive and a bit grubby but i think this pool area will be closed off and renovated after the first one is finished (again, accept that renovation is happening and support them in doing this.... some other resorts would just allow things to fall apart and expect to keep clientelle!!). the kids club was nothing to look at but they had some really good activities and my children loved it (they are 8 and 6)... the staff took them fishing and they made some fantastic parasols as a keepsake.... i'm looking forward to coming back and seeing how the kids club has been upgraded! also, we had the meritus club option in our package which meant that we could pop into the club anytime for a drink or snack for free and we used it for breakfast too!! would choose that again definitely!! so, to summarise, meritus pelangi has the most amazing and friendly staff, the upgrading work is going really well and causes no noise disruption, the location is walking distance from the main street of pantai cenang (underwater world etc.), the upgraded rooms are lovely, the private beach is huge and very well cared for with plenty of loungers etc., the resort is massive with lots to explore inside and kept very clean. was the price high for half a resort? well, it was £202 per night for a family meritus club package and although that seems expensive Langkawi IS expensive for accommodation but cheap to eat and drink out of resort. we stayed at Holiday Villas (also pantai cenang) in february and that cost £192 per night and it wasn't a patch on this place so i didn't feel gutted about paying this much for a better resort. so, if you are booking this place... you could phone/email and ask for a new room to be guaranteed if you think it's the most important thing in your holiday. i saw the old rooms and of course they are looking tired but when i originally booked i honestly thought i would end up with one of them and it wouldn't have put me off! if in doubt, wait until 2013 or increase your budget massively for your trip to langkawi!!

Room Tip: we stayed in room 901 which is new and just a few steps from the sand. sitting on our loungers (rig...

We booked this hotel after reading lots of reviews (including tripadvisor) and having checked in, began to think that we were in the wrong hotel. We booked back in February for a July holiday. We actually phoned the hotel to confirm the first phase of renovation would be complete with the likelihood of staying in a refurbished room being good. All confirmed at the time.
Needless to say, our two rooms were old, overlooking the lake (dirty pond) with the smallest most claustrophobic balconies you could imagine. Also on the ground floor which means that if you have noisy upstairs neighbours, which we did for four nights out of eight, your sleep quality is lousy. The front desk staff appear concerned but are unable to help. Our advice - insist on top floor rooms on check-in. On a positive note the rooms are a good size and the furnishings were once good, but now feel shabby, dated and tired. The 'shower in bath' with a steep step in and out of the bath would not be suitable for older guests. The TV was at least 15-20 years old, a small box. There was only a small selection of free channels anyway, so we didn't use it.
Yes, the staff are smiley, but so they should be in a four star property. Not friendly though. The only staff member exuding genuine friendliness was the chef at the egg station at breakfast, who always ensures he serves people in the right order, AND with a smile! The breakfast itself is a very average example of its ilk; we expected more from a Meritus property. And the hotel should employ someone to hover around the food to prevent the children from touching everything with their fingers. The breakfast room was always understaffed, except for very early in the morning. It was difficult to get a tea or coffee refill with a smile.

The horizon pool is pleasant, but was closed whilst we were there. Even before it was closed you had to pretend you couldn't hear the electric saws and drills from the refurb. The advantage of the Horizon pool was that it opens onto the beach, giving a slight breeze. The Cascade pool, now the only one open, feels claustrophobic, is a fair way from the beach, and there was never the slighest breeze to be had there.

There is free Wi-Fi in the lobby which is soulless, even when the resident trio were performing live. Most people sitting there were there purely for the internet connection, which is extortionately priced if you want it in your room.

Our worst experience was on checkout day. We booked a late checkout (for a late flight) at 40RM an hour, no negotiation possible, even though we knew that our rooms were next on the list to be refurbished. We arrived back at our rooms after lunch, not able to access one of them, as the entrance was blocked by the beds and furniture which had been removed from all the other rooms in the block. Not a happy end to our stay.

The beach; not soft white sand as some have said, but coarse shells for the most part. Difficult to negotiate without shoes. The water quality is quite good but far from crystal clear because of the sediment on the sea bed. The dirtiest stretch of the Pantai Cenang beach was in front of the Meritus Pelangi. How hard would it be to clean the bottles, cans and general garbage away? Other hotels along the beach did. Water sports from the hotel - non-existent. A very run-down beach shack completely unattended.

This hotel is a good example of those trying to wring every last cent possible from their guests. I can report that nothing was for free, except the lobby wi-fi connection. Not even the extremely run-down mini-golf.

If you're undecided between the Casa del Mar and the Meritus Pelangi, like we were, choose the former. At least until the works are finished. For the amount of money we paid, we felt decidedly short-changed, especially as guests started checking in to the new rooms a couple of days after we arrived.

Room Tip: Do not accept ground floor rooms except in single storey chalets.

We were happily upgraded to a pool facing room. Upon entering the room my husband realized of the old box tv in the room.
Cleaning was very standard. We had to complain on old dead bugs lying around the room for two days to be cleaned. Also, we had an uncomfortable night with screetiching noises from the ceiling and mossie bites. After raising these issues with management, the cleaning staff acted promptly.
The pool area was full at times during our stay. They are currently upgrading their second pool.
Drinks at overpriced at double the price compared to restaurants around the area.
Overall, the resort is nice to stay as it is well situated in a popular area. Staff are friendly. But make sure if you book here to read that it charges 10% more per night for service charges on top of prices displayed at their website.

We have just left a beachside room which was very dated and cave-like it was so dark. We were in front of a gorgeous beach, but had a few very tiny windows to look out, and those were covered with curtains that couldn't be pulled back - what a waste! I was disappointed not to be in an upgraded room, we booked about 5 mths ago, they certainly look better. What we had was way overpriced. The check-in was very freindly but incredibly inefficent, we waited around for ages, while the clerk walked back and forward to the desk - we were sitting in the lounge & did get a drink, but after travelling, waiting for security, customs etc, I really don't want to be waiting to check -in, I want to get to my room asap! Room service was slow - we asked for ice one night and it just never arrived, the next night it took 40 mins for an ice bucket & 2 glasses and then we were charged for the ice - I have NEVER been charged for ice in a hotel before. Having said that the lobby staff & tour guide desk were very helpful. This hotel is in a great location, only hope after the upgrade it is improved, but the main pool is empty and there are tin fences everywhere - so maybe you should wait before you visit.

Room Tip: Make sure you are in an upgraded room, the beachside look good.

We recently stayed at this hotel in May for 5 nights. We had a sensational time, from the moment we walked into the reception room, with a big walm friendly welcome, to being upgraded as hotel was pretty quiet and the overall experience was brilliant. I thought the location of this hotel was great, at the end of a beautiful beach only a 5-10 walk to the nearest town, which was plentiful in cafes, restaurants, fish spas and the like. The hotel rooms were large and clean with an authentic theme. The grounds of the hotel kept beautifully with fantastic swimming pools. Much to the satisfaction my two small children a great slide into each of them, but more than enough room for everybody to enjoy the pool areas. Lots of loungers and peace and quiet. The hotel is going through renovations but the noise is minimal, they have closed down whole wings at a time so it does not impact guests. The breakfast was exceptional, offering everything imagionable for both Western and Malay tastes. During our stay it was our son's 6th birthday and the hotel could not have done enough to make this fun for him. They provided a beautiful cake, the staff signed a card and set up an area to give this to him with singing aswell. A great memory. I read other coments on here, yes the rooms are slightly dated, this is being sorted, but its not grubby or in anyway affects your stay, they are large, great balcony's, private, cleaned immaculately daily and very comfortable. The only query to management would be the resort sports activities area does need a complete overall.
