“Amazing heritage property...”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 6 June 2012

it seems though that you can only stay here if you are undergoing some ayurvedic treatment...We stayed here for a night as we had a doctor appointment...the property is basically part of an ancestral home... remodeled...this place certainly has a great character...time just stoops here...
quiet, calm and so relaxed...you will get a feel of a typical kerala village life..
the staffs were ever smiling and always helpful...and the food (all veg fare) was simply superb (apparently your food will be tailor made as per the treatment you are undergoing)...

A must if you are looking for authentic kerala ayurvedic treatment (long term)...

Room Tip: Look around...the village temple is a step away...you could ask for a kalari demonstration...and mak...

I spent 10 days at this place during the last week of Oct 2011 & underwent treatment for stress & frequent ENT ailments. The institution has two respected senior physicians of exalted pedigree in Kerala Ayurvedic systems & the place follows a strict & standardized regimen of diet & treatment procedures.

Treatment & Tariff: Although it is claimed that treatment for each individual is customized, this is limited to the medicines. Treatment procedure is more or less standardized. The only exotic feel is that it is an old Kerala style mansion situated in an interior Kerala village (in the midst of refreshing greenery) belonging to a scion of a rich Namboodiri family who was widely respected for his deep knowledge in Ayurveda, Kalaripayattu, etc. A beautiful temple of Lord Rama exists just beside as also the temple pond & Kalari centre. The standard tariff charged is Rs. 5000 per day including non A/c room, all meals, treatment & taxes. For special treatments, this could be higher. Extra person accompanying the patient is charged Rs. 750 per day all inclusive.
The treatment schedule can be demanding & requires a great degree of commitment & will power. Contrary to their claims & popular belief, any patient admitted is subjected to a schedule which is more or less fixed. The day typically starts at 5.30 am with a kashayam (bitter liquid concoction of ayurvedic ingredients) whose objective is to churn the stomach & induce vomiting or motion as a first step of detoxification. By 7.30 am, tea or coffee is served in the room. Breakfast at 8.30 am (can also get delayed till 9 or 9.15 on some days) is either preceded or followed by an abhyangam (oil massage session) along with shirodhara (steady dripping of prescribed oil onto the forehead). This is followed by swedanam (steaming) & bath. Lunch is supposed to be ready by 12.45 pm, but may be expected by 1 or 1.30 pm. Immediately thereafter, a mathra vasthi (oil enema – 60 ml) is given. Sleep is strictly forbidden in the afternoon. Tea or coffee is served in the room by 3.30 pm. Around 4 pm, specific treatment for the chronic condition is carried out – nasyam (oil through the nose – for ENT ailments), thallam (massage by applying atta / wheat paste on the back), etc. Dinner will be served by 7 pm. Food is very simple & basic devoid of / with reduced quantities of oil, salt, spices, condiments, tamarind, etc. which is reasonably ok. The minimum duration of any in-patient treatment is 10 days, with 14 days being the standard, 21 & 28 days being the ideal for chronic issues. The toughest period will be the last few days when a procedure called kashaya vasthi is carried out. The routine & diet described above is not valid during these days. The kashaya vasthi is an aggressive detoxification system done at the fag end of the treatment period. It involves a 1 litre oil enema consisting of base oil, kashayam (concoction), honey, rock salt & herbal paste. Within a few seconds of injection, you are guaranteed to rush to the toilet & relieve yourself. This is carried out for 3 or 5 days & on these days, the diet consists of only milk-water mix, water boilt with raisins & decanted, oats in milk-water mix & rice porridge in milk-water mix. No formal offer or rates are given in advance, with the claim being that everything is dependent on the treatment advised by the physician. However, the actual billing is done on a universal package basis irrespective of scope of treatment.

Approach of the Management / Administrators: If you happen to be from the West, outside India or a Non Resident Indian, you can expect a much better reception comprising of a garlanded welcome, coconut water, etc. This may be a clear indication of their preference for a certain class of clientele. Another case in point which belied their approach to business was the levying of a 2.25% surcharge if you choose to settle the bill using your credit card. And this despite the bill amount assured to exceed Rs. 50,000 per patient. Yet another reprehensible practice was collecting an entire day’s charges without any treatment or night halt by delaying discharge by a few hours. However, it must be mentioned that the attitude & services of the staff down the line is quite good.

Rooms: Very ordinary to say the least & a bit of a wildlife sanctuary with frogs, millipedes, spiders expected to be frequent visitors. If you are (un)fortunate to get one of the a/c rooms on the first floor, you can expect rodents run around in the middle of the night. For the kind of money charged, the bed linen, pillows & cover should have been a lot cleaner. The toilet seat had broken off the hinges with no attempts at repair being initiated. The intercom wasn’t working during the entire period of my stay & no one bothered to fix it.

To sum up, I would say this is a calm & peaceful Ayurvedic centre with certain aspects of their service that could be better.

Room Tip: Opt for the heritage rooms in the old block facing the courtyard

This is NOT a resort type of hotel. It's more of a relaxing treatment center for ayurveda purpose.
I recommend this place for those who want Ayurveda treatment, not those wanting spa resort.
- the 2 senior doctors are believed to be from the famous legendary families in ayurveda (they come about twice/wk)
- the 2 resident doctors are on standby all the time. and very friendly to answer any questions.
- the care is close, since only 9 rooms totally at the center.
- first timers, should allocate ideally 2wks for treatment.
- Fixed time for meals & tea break & sleep time, according to ayurveda way
