“Disappointing”
Reviewed 23 July 2011

While Kalari Kovilakum is a beautiful place, I am very disappointed in the trip and wish I had gone elsewhere. The ayurvedic treatment involved drinking larger and larger quantities of clarified butter, daily until you were (not surprisingly) quite ill and sick. There were generally two treatments a day, which ranged from being quite enjoyable to downright uncomfortable. I am quite open to introspection but guests were just left to their own devices between treatments and meals and it actually became quite tedious. We were not allowed to leave the grounds so I would have appreciated more talks or group cookery lessons or individual yoga lessons to make better use of the time and learn more about ayurveda.

I hoped to immerse myself in the entire experience and return with a better outlook and feeling rejuvenated but Kalari didn’t deliver any of this for me. The treatment was not well explained, the doctors were uncommunicative (mine wasn’t there for three or four days of my treatment) and there was no mental stimulation, other than that provided by the other “inmates”. The other guests were mostly women, travelling solo. Most were Russian, with some French and Polish. English speakers were the minority.

The yoga lessons were almost exactly the same every day and the instructor insisted on my attending the earlier class and setting my wakeup alarm for 5.30 am (against my wishes), since it made the rather dull days even longer. I must stress that I am extremely interested in alternative medicine and holistic treatments and have visited several other “wellness” clinics/resorts. I wish I had gone back to one of those.

I was here for 21 days and felt completely relaxed and balanced at the end of it. The property is an old palace that has been renovated. The rooms are stately and beautiful with all modern amenities. The staff are very polite and friendly. The doctors are knowledgeable and take the time to listen to you.

Dont go here expecting a spa experience. This is an ayurvedic treatment center in an extremely beautiful setting. This means your massages can be tiring, and some of your treatments can be mildly uncomfortable. But at the end of it, you will come out happy, in peace and glowing.

There are only 18 rooms here, so it is an intimate setting. You quickly make friends with the other guests over meals.

Food is light, fresh, very tasty and prepared according to your ayurvedic constitution and served in a traditional way.

Some Tips:

Pack light - all guests have to wear the white cotton kurta pyjamas that they provide. So all you need is under wear. They bring you a fresh pair of clothes everyday and are happy to alter them to fit you better. Pack light colored underwear, because the kurta pyjamas they give you are a thin material and slightly see through.

Bring a white shawl or cardigan - evenings can be cool, and sometimes you feel cold after certain treatments. White socks will also be great.

Bring books and movies - you will have plenty of free time, so bring light reading and movies. They recommend you dont read or watch anything heavy/serious

I have had several ayurvedic treatmen before and Kalari Kovilakam is by far the best. They practise ayurveda in an authentic, honest way. You can tell this place is fabulous from the number of repeat guests here.

Highly recommended.
