I booked my room for the monaco grand prix weekend six months in advance. Just prior to the trip I received a message from Booking.Com that the hotel manager had informed them that he "would not honor the reseervation"! I was left without accommodation, separated from the rest of my party including my grown kids and forced to pay $1,000 per night for a room outside of Monaco and walk 1.5 miles each way to the track twice a day. They were not only completely unapologetic - they were insulting. I would NEVER stay there nor would I EVER book with Booking.com. Unbelievable.

My wife and I stayed two nights in late-March 2012. We booked a 1 bedroom apartment (for 4 people) because the pictures appeared to show a 2 person apartment had only a sofa-bed. What we got was a roomy apartment with a separate bedroom with double bed, and a sofa-bed in lounge area. It had a tiny kitchen and small dining table in the lounge. The bed was quite hard but turned out to be reasonably comfortable. The bathroom was small with the shower in the bath. The toilet was mounted ridiculously close to the wall making it awkward to use. The hot water took ages to come through and then would continually change from hot to cold and back again. The apartment was superficially clean but is getting tired and needs a good scrub out. Tiled floors were not clean and our feet were black from walking on the tiles. There was a little mould between the bathroom tiles. The room was not service or cleaned during our stay. The kitchenette was handy for preparing our own food, but the dishwasher did not wash very well. The heating system was still on despite temperatures in the low 20’sC, but both windows opened for fresh air. The apartment was a comfortable size for 2 people; 4 would have been very crowded. TV and Wifi worked OK. The streets around the hotel are narrow and one way, as with most of Monaco. The parking garage is hard to locate at first and easily confused with another garage next door. The ticketing arrangements for parking are cumbersome and time consuming with several trips to and from the carpark required. This was one of the more expensive hotels in our 6 week holiday in Europe, and was one of the disappointments. Definitely not 4 star, perhaps 3 star (just).

We stayed at the Palais Josephine as part of an escorted group in Monaco for the Monte Carlo Rally, so we didn't have a choice of hotel, and after reading some of the very negative comments here I wasn't looking forward to it. What a pleasant surprise! After initial hassle with the card key (which didn't work, so we were given a traditional one which did, with a bit of judicious wiggling) we entered a large, clean apartment with a spacious balcony, a little kitchen with fridge, dishwasher, hob, sink and dual microwave, a comfortable bed and, to my husband's delight, a bathroom with a proper full-size bath. OK, there were one or two small niggles - the shower attachment had broken off its holder, and the remote wouldn't turn the TV on or off, though it did change channels - but the size of the apartment, the facilities and above all its position right in the middle of things more than made up for it. I loved looking down on the bustling market from the balcony, and we weren't disturbed by any noise. There's a cheap bar and an Indian restaurant close by, as well as a pizzeria and a supermarket, and you're literally only five minutes' amble from the Casino. We never sampled the pool - closed in January - but I can imagine that in the summer it would be a really good place. The staff were friendly and helpful, and all spoke at least a little English - the ladies on the desk were fluent and happy to tell us what the best sights were and where the buses stopped. I'd certainly stay there again.
