Can Xiquet is a nice hotel in a lovely remote setting but it has a TERRIBLE RESTAURANT. Remote is the key word here because there is nothing nearby to see or do and the nearest town, La Jonquera, is basically a giant truck stop with a multitude of prostitutes working at every roundabout. We tried the Can Xiquet restaurant for dinner on the night we arrived and quickly realized that we made a big mistake. Practically everything on the menu was frozen which was confirmed by the buzzing microwave noise emanating from the kitchen. Even the bread is frozen because it arrived at the table still cold in the middle.

On the second day we asked at the reception desk for a recommendation for another restaurant and we were told “There is nothing nearby”. We did a quick internet search and found one restaurant, Els Fogans di Canadal, in the outskirts of La Jonquera. I asked the gentleman at reception about Els Fogans and he nervously told me “No, they are only open for lunch”. Not satisfied with his response I asked him if he could please call the restaurant to verify their hours. He fumbled with the telephone and made a rather pathetic attempt to pretend that the phone was out of order. Obviously the management does not want their guests to know about Els Fogans because as it turned out, it is a very good restaurant that serves fresh fish, seafood and meats.

Since we were hungry after a long day of driving we had no choice but to have dinner at Can Xiquet another time. This time we were seated not in the restaurant but in the “wine cellar” along with another table of diners. The other diners were loud (and rude) making the noise level in the tiny room unbearable. Our second meal turned out to be even worse than the first. The so-called veal steak was not only frozen but tough as shoe leather. We left the entire dish uneaten because it was disgusting. The next afternoon we decided to drive to Els Fogans and were warmly greeted by the owner who assured us that they are open for dinner every night. We made a reservation for that evening and had a wonderful meal.

Our room at Can Xiquet was a good size and offered a nice view of the mountains. However the mattresses were horrible and neither of us got a good night sleep during our stay. The bathroom has a glass wall that faces the sleeping area. For privacy there is a shade which when rolled down reveals a pattern composed of dead mosquitoes. Does this sound like a four star hotel? There is obviously a mosquito problem because we were devoured by them during the night. I asked for an electronic mosquito trap at the reception desk but was given instead an almost empty can of poisonous insecticide spray which we declined to use.

The management obviously thinks they can take advantage of their hotel guests by serving cheap, frozen food at outrageously high prices. If you do stay at Can Xiquet DO NOT EAT AT THE RESTAURANT. Instead go to Els Fogons de Canadal near La Jonquera. But I recommend passing by Can Xiquet and finding a hotel that has more restaurant options and a management that appreciates its guests.

I cannot speak too highly of the hotel facilities and its staff. We were greeted after a long walk with a welcoming smile and the offer of a cold beer, both of which really hit the spot. Our bags had already been taken to our room (this simple act is being a rarity) which proved to be absolutely wonderful, albeit that it was at the back of the hotel and the little terrace had no view to speak of - everything else was top notch. Excellent service at dinner as well but the food can only be classed as on the plus side of good - a little more effort given to this and the hotel would score ten out of ten on all fronts.

Room Tip: Those at the front of the hotel would have a view for miles.

I have given this hotel a four star rating mainly due to the location and views from the rooms. We have stayed here many many times on our way down to the south of Spain by car over the years and it has only been in the last two visits that we have noticed a change, I now understand from another comment made that it has changed hands, so maybe this is the reason.

The main problem is the food, last October I had a bad meal and had to send it back but this time it was more serious as the food is obviously reheated in a microwave and my meal of pasta and king prawns had raw prawns in it, it was very lucky that I cut into one of them to check otherwise I would have had a very unpleasant evening.

We will stay here again as it is an ideal point for us to stop but definitely will not be eating here again.

If you want a place to stay that ticks all the boxes, Can Xiquet is it!
We have a friend who lives in a small village not far from the hotel and it was he who recommended the place.
We have just spent five nights staying in this wonderful hotel.
The staff were first class, the food was wonderful, the rooms were clean and bright and airy.
The view from your room is sensational.
If you are looking for a hotel in a tranquil setting, this is the place for you. My husband said it has been the best hotel he has ever stayed in and he has travelled the world and is very discerning!
We plan to go once a month during the winter as we have found a hotel where we can switch off and truly relax

We chose this hotel expecting a peaceful holiday with a restaurant to match its 4* rating . Unfortunately this was not the case. It has recently been taken over by the local butcher and his wife and it would appear that they are quickly learning by exprience how to run a hotel business . Our room "Genebre" had spectacular views but on the first night we were kept awake by a very noisy air conditioning unit that had not been serviced in a while . The following 4 nights we were awoken at various times by a loud banging noise coming from the roof above . After various assurances that the problem would be sorted we were eventually moved to another room . This was fine apart from the fact that it took upto 15 mins for the toilet to refill after flushing !
We met the owner who agreed they did not offer a 4* dining experience and you can find some wonderful local cuisine just down the road .
I was suprised that no compensation was offered after our 7 day stay and only after I complained was a nominal sum deducted from our bill .
