Owner description: In 2005 a group of speleologues leaded by Mr Michele Parisi, discovers and makes know to people tunnels, cisterns, aqueducts, cells, rocky churches, barns, old furnaces hidden in meanders placed under the city centre. In this suggestive world they discovered great towers and ruins of old city walls. It is very interesting to admire the historical cells of the Ducal Palace (the house in which pope Benedict XIII was born), the cell placed under the seat of Gravina Souterrain, the cells of Amato Palace.

Unfortunately I do not know whether a single visitor could go to this attraction as I visited with a group but best to either visit the information office or, better still, their website. We had a guide who spoke excellent English which was a real bonus. It would appear that the entire town is situated over caves and this one is quite large going deeper and deeper into the "underworld". This particular warren of caves is, unbelievably, under one house and the entrance is actually through the garage! Any prospective visitor must bear in mind that they must be able to negotiate steep steps.
We had no chance to visit the rest of Gravina but I would expect that this is the highlight of the town.

This was a really interesting tour, it has been amazing to see how the people were building their city through graving into it from beneath. The guide was lively, intelligent and knowledgeable, and we all enjoyed it a lot!

We took the middle size tour and visited three underground spaces, all three were worth seeing.

Gravina in Puglia actually has little to offer, other than the spectacular Palazzo Sottile Meninni. A great small church right by this hotel (the one with the skulls and crossbones). Pay the 3 euros and go in with a guide. The Sotterranea tour really just took us downstairs for a little bit and explained about the caves. (Not for the claustrophobic.) The real place to do this is in Matera, which is a much bigger cave city with many more interesting things to see. Skip this tour. Nice young lady tour guide, but not really worth doing this.

A good way to see an aspect (underground) of an old Puglia city. It was not expensive and it was interesting. The guide did speak adequate English.

A once in a lifetime experience. The whole town of Gravina sits on a Warren of limestone caves that were extended by excavations to use their blocks as building materials. You get to walk down in a huge such cavern. Fascinating.
