“Great location, but usual Parador syndrome”
Reviewed 12 October 2011

As with so many Paradors in Spain, the location is sensational, but the hotel is let down by its slovenly service and hide-bound, rules-based Stalinist culture. Someone really ought to get a grip on these hotels, as they could be so much better. Having said that, this is a perfectly acceptable mountain hotel (only 3 star, not a top-rated Parador), with comfortable rooms. The food is quite acceptable at breakfast, and really rather good for dinner. There are quite a few public rooms which are left empty with no staff in attendance, while the pre-dinner bar area is cramped, small and unattractive, with no view. Service, as already hinted, varies from very pleasant to surly and 'couldn't care less'. For a mountain hotel, it is remarkable that there are no walking guides or suggestions in the hotel, and the staff appear to know nothing about local walks (or perhaps just can't be bothered to tell you).
If you do want a superb walk, take the cable car from just opposite the hotel up to the top, then walk up the gentle incline for 15 minutes, then bear right to descend into the next valley. Walk through the lodge car park and continue down the path, turning right at the bottom. Walk along until you come to a crumbling gateway, then go right over the little footbridge, carefully pick your way down the steep path to the stream at the bottom, then turn right and walk through the woods all the way back to the Parador - once you see the cable car off to your right, after a further hour or so, look for a small track on the right just past a power pylon and then next to a 5 bar gate. This will take you back to the Parador, which has a private entrance gate off the path at the side of the hotel (not that the staff would ever tell you....). The whole trip takes about 5 hours with the odd break.

Room Tip: Rooms at the very back have the best mountain views, although all rooms have some sort of view and a...

Travelled from Gijon stopping in Cangas de Onis and lovely Potes. This is a modern parador in a valley. Take the jaw dropping cable car to the top of the mountain and you will be rewarded with fantastic views. Whilst we stayed in comfortable parador we enjoyed super meals and wine. Early one morning we booked, via the parador, an early morning guided jeep tour into the Picos de Europa and saw wild horses, rolling clouds and superb enchanting views. Thoroughly enjoyed this visit.

Fabulous location against a backdrop of towering mountains. Take the cable car up to the 5000 ft level and hike all day. This location could not be better. The hotel itself is quite ordinary with a 1970s feel to it. Although we have no actual complaints, we likely would not stay there again were it not for its location.

This hotel was not quite as nice as we hoped. The building itself is outdated and kind of ugly although the rooms are big and definitely clean. The people at the front desk weren't very friendly and one woman in particular was unpleasant. However, it is in a great location and very peaceful - overall, a good experience.

The location is lovely right in the Picos de Europa. The rooms are nice and very spacious. Good amenities and cleaning. Various trekking routes starting and they even provide traditional walking sticks. Internet working perfectly. Very good breakfast too. I would definitely stay here again.
