“Interesting but...”
Reviewed 30 January 2012

If you are really interested in Japanese history, you may enjoy this Edo-Tokoyo Museum very much. There are quite many interesting exhibitions and excellent replicas which you can see the old time in Japan. BUT if you're not interested in Japanese history, you might find here quite boring.

“Reserve an English tour before you go”
Reviewed 25 January 2012

We showed up at this museum one afternoon without much forethought. We began walking through the earliest history period section and were very disappointed to see how very little was translated to English (this is fine because we are foreign tourists, but in a history museum I think objects are just objects unless you know their significance). My husband and I walked around a little bit forlornly, realizing we would not get the full experience. BUT WAIT, what is that I hear? English! We found a female volunteer dressed in kimono providing an English tour to two British tourists and began basically stalking this tour. The stories she was telling were just so interesting that we would inch our way behind the group as they moved from display to display. Finally we asked the British tourists if we could join their tour and they were very gracious and said yes. Our experience immediately improved 100% and we heard a lot of wonderfully colored stories from the volunteer tour guide. Her English was very good and she was very hospitable. We learned later that you can request a tour several months in advance and up until 2 or 3 pm based on availability (you might want to look into this more if you're planning a trip). The museum has many very interesting displays and we found that as the museum moved into more modern eras, more of the displays were translated into English, though we still learned more from our guide than what was printed out. There is plenty to see a few things to actually do--you can sit inside a rickshaw, try to ring the fire alarm, etc. The section on WWII was what I found most interesting. This was a great way to spend an afternoon.

“Well designed treat”

Super building and layout - you go to the top to start your tour and work your way down - a lot of models of buildings with some life size ones - that makes it good even you read no Japanese.

“Edo Museum - A Look at the history of Tokyo.”
Reviewed 5 January 2012

This is a remarkable museum that comprehensively displays the history of Tokyo and the Edo shogunate. English guides are available. Many floors of magnificent displays. And the architecture of the museum is also something you want to experience.

“Old-school Tokyo”
Reviewed 24 December 2011

Nice architectural museum in the middle of a big beautiful park. If you are interested in the old style buildings this is worth the trip. You can visit traditional homes, a little nomi-ya (drinking spot), and even a bath house. Beautifully preserved. Good English information.
