“Back to the Park Hyatt”
Reviewed 24 April 2012

The keyword, these days, is 'endaka'. This means that the exchange rate is definitely not helping if compared to our previous stay.
However, at some 50k Yen per night for a Week-End offer (includes a 16:00 check-out) the Park Hyatt experience remains unmatched. Spacious room and bathroom, amazing breakfast (both Japanese and continental), a stunning swimming pool (with perfect service, and not too crowded around lunchtime), great views at the New York Grill ... and one of the best bars on the planet.
The only room for improvement is the rather impersonal way check-out is handled, through a separate 'cashier' desk.

I recently stayed with my partner at the Park Hyatt for 6 nights in a Park View King Room. The experience was pleasant but, ultimately, not very memorable. Make no mistake, this is an extremely well-run international 5-star hotel. It is chic and stylish and the staff are ultra-professional but it is also a little generic and strikingly disconnected from its environment and cultural milieu. Indeed, it's possibly no coincidence that the Park Hyatt is best known as the hotel featured in "Lost In Translation", Sophia Coppola's indie hit about two Americans striking up an unlikely relationship while sojourning in Tokyo, as the hotel somehow seems to enshrine the film's central themes of cultural dislocation and 'placelessness'. The decor and design is decidedly Euro-American with little attempt to incorporate anything remotely Japanese. Moreover, the whole hotel is curiously removed from its adjacent environment and streetscape: it's not easy to access and entry is via a rather circuitous range of raised driveways, lifts and hallways that is possibly designed to foster a sense of secrecy and exclusivity but quickly becomes tiresome when you just want to get in and out on a daily basis. Things aren't helped by the fact that the area in which the hotel is located is predominantly office space and government buildings so there's not a lot on offer in the immediate vicinity, especially on the weekend when the surrounding offices are closed and the area is deathly dull. Admittedly, it's only a 10-15 min walk to the heart of Shinjuku's commercial district but the blandness of the immediate neighbourhood does rather add to the overall sterility of the hotel. This is of course an entirely personal response and I repeat that one can't fault the quality of the premises or of the service, all of which is top notch and exactly what one would expect from a 5-star property of this calibre and price range. However, ultimately, for us, the Park Hyatt was a bit of a let-down and didn't offer the sort of memorable cultural experience we were hoping for.

Room Tip: We had a corner room with views to Mt Fuji on one side which was only visible one of the six days we...

I stayed in this iconic property for 3 nights in late March 2012. I found everything I expected in terms of style, efficiency, courtesy. It is difficult to describe the feeling that everybody has while staying at this property, and I think I should simply say that the Sum is even better than the Parts.
Don't get me wrong: everything is perfect, pristine, immaculate. But if you look at room decor per se, for instance, you may not be blown away. The "Extra factor" is in the details here. And in the energy of the hotel: what you feel walking from the lobby, through the beautiful dining room, toward your check in, and then up to your room. Is that a Fellini sketch on the wall? Little surprises, that make the whole difference.

This is a serious, first-class hotel about 10 minutes from the Shinjuku station, which is one of the major metro stops, including the JR line's Narita Express. Rooms are beautiful, views are spectacular. Staff is extraordinary, particularly the concierge team, and specifically Belinda, who was extremely helpful in making plans that included dining, transportation and even a baseball game. Buffet breakfast is terrific, overlooking the bustling city. The famed New York Grill on the top floor provides panoramic views of Tokyo at night, perfect cocktails, and live music. The gym is well-equipped and also looks out over the city below.
All-in-all, a sensational experience, well worth the expense if one has the budget for it.

Although the Tokyo Park Hyatt is expensive, it's a delightful place to stay--right in the heart of Shinjuku, with a great collection of restaurants and those personal touches that only Park Hyatt provides.

Sleep like a king--and enjoy the view!
