We enjoyed our one week stay in Tokyo. I chose this place because being close to a school I figured it would be safe for our teenagers to wander around, get food or take a walk unaccompanied. The neighborhood was safe, convenient and there were plenty of good convenience stores and restaurants. It was also a short walk to the bus to Asukusa, the train to major sights, and the only running tram which takes you to sunshine city and a nice outdoor food marketplace with shops ond street food. We were very lucky since I didn't know about the bus and tram until Brad told us. He was the perfect host and never more than a message away from help and advice. Book this place. It is clean, comfortable for a large family (2 adults/3 teenagers) and convenient. You will be glad you did.
Gee - where to begin? Well - this occasion was our first visit to Japan however we are reasonably well traveled. This time we came into Tokyo a couple of days ahead of our cruise (Princess Diamond) and stayed at a hotel in Tokyo. We found that hotel to be very small in room size but the buffet breakfast was good. After our cruise we stayed at the Camel Park property hosted by Brad and Seiko.
From the beginning to end the visit reflected surprising courtesy by our hosts, thoughtful planning to make our arrival, stay and departure superior. Their self criticisms are perhaps overly critical. We did NOT thing their home was "old". The upkeep was rather good. The rooms were SPACIOUS and it was far superior compared to any hotel of similar cost. Granted our first stay was at a nice Tokyo hotel with free breakfast ... but this stay had cooking facilities with supermarkets near by. Plus it is safe to say NO ONE starves in Japan with the abundance of reasonably priced dining options.
IE - we had n orientation chat with Seiko on arrival where she pointed out several fine dining recommendations near by. Then she left a notebook reference complete with detailed discussion of those same restaurants with pictures to boot! Amazing!
So what about the home? We found it to be clean, spacious and seriously cozy. The AC worked just fine and the comfort was excellent. If you're in the house during the day (one daughter stayed in most of one day) then you might notice the playground next door is used by kids. DUH, it is a playground! So you get a little of that + in the distance you can hear a bit of a train from time to time. The water heater is funky kewl with a authentic Japanese style tub and shower in one portion of the bathroom. Yes - it is different from what we have back home but that adds enormously to the charm. I might comment that if you're tall or like a basketball player in height - you might notice the home is built with a slightly lower height person in mind? Chuckles.
Otherwise - the induction cook top is powerful. The cleanliness is excellent and really we had no complaints. Even walking home after midnight was totally safe as one should expect. We noticed that many residents left their bicycles unlocked in the area + there were signs noting that CCTV security cameras were operating. However I could not spot any when I looked. The walk from the nearest subway station i about OK - not especially short but not long either. We found the walks through the neighborhood to get home were filled with charm and details for the eye to enjoy.
Closing thoughts - I thought Brad and Seiko were seriously gracious hosts. I won't go into particulars of how - to leave wiggle room for you to be PLEASANTLY surprised. Plus I imagine everyones' experiences might differ. I can only say I was just impressed and surprised how wonderful our hosts were. The best vote of confidence is that when our family returns to visit Tokyo we are certainly going to reach out to stay at this property again - or we might consider one of their other properties. They have a cute Pokemon decorated home which our kid were interested in visiting!
So what are you waiting for - drop them a note and book a stay with them!
We had a wonderful stay at Brad and Seiko's house. They were very helpful and recommended some great places to eat. We loved the location of the house, quiet but close to Machiya station for easy access into busy Tokyo. We were travelling with two small children and were provided a box of toys to use during our stay and a high chair.
This house was a great rental! The beds were comfortable and everything was nice and clean when we arrived. The owners were super nice and helpful. They even took our trash away during the week when we didn't put it out on the curb properly, and offered to replace our towels. (We washed themselves already because they had a washer and dryer right in the house-- great for a those long-term vacation!) The neighborhood is super safe and super quiet at night. There are a ton of great restaurants around the station, all within walking distance. There are a number of convenience stores and supermarkets just around the corner.
The rooms have plenty of closet space that might not be apparent in the photos. But even with 6 people in the house at once, we barely used them. The only downside to the house is that the bathrooms are tiny and the shower room might be a little too "rustic" for some folks. There's also no bathroom sink so you'll have to take turns brushing your teeth in the kitchen's sink. Everything worked perfectly, however, so these minor inconveniences were no problem for me and my group of 20-somethings.
If I were to do another long stay in Tokyo, I'd definitely rent this house again!
We loved our stay at the FAMILY HOUSE. Seiko and Brad are wonderful hosts and made us feel welcome and comfortable. We spent our first five nights in Japan at the FAMILY HOUSE. It's in a great location and a wonderful neighborhood. The house was very comfortable and we enjoyed sitting around the family table for breakfast and then an evening chat before bed. The rooms, beds, and futons were all very comfortable. The bathroom and kitchen were spotless.
Seiko and Brad were most gracious. Their house manual is a work of art and should be used as a model for other vacation rentals. Their suggestions for places to eat were spot on; we had some of our most favorite meals in Japan in Machiya.
We highly recommend the FAMILY HOUSE to any family or group of friends that is visiting Tokyo!
