It was as we expected in that it could do with a refurbishment ( I believe ? owned by Wainwrights Brewery ? ) but it was comfortable and clean and ideal for walkers and a short stay, the food was good as were the staff, very friendly and helpful. had a deal for two nights stayed for three., not three star but hey it's a B & B Inn in an ideal location. doesn't deserve all the negative comments, you get what you pay for.

Room Tip: Room 5 full facility's back of building so quiet but no view except a high bank

We stayed on a 2 night deal and found the place had had a lot of previous bad press but gave it a go.
Stayed in room 3 which was very small with en suite the room was clean but in desperate need of a re vamp. The en suite was just to small the shower base was rusty and you couldn't even get showered properly ,the room itself a bit musky/damp smelling, the carpet was thread bare in places and very little storage of clothes etc we didn't stay for the second night due to the smallness of the room. The food was ok but was expensive for what you got, the beer was good and an average price. The location very quite and an ideal place for walkers.

On arrival we found out our booking was for the day after but the landlord was happy to accommodate us without a fuss. The beer garden was beautifully sunny and the surrounding environment is stunning. Had a fabulous meal and really enjoyed our stay which was excellent value for money. Will definitely return to the area again and would stay at The Sportsman as it is such good value.

I have read previous reviews about The Sportsman and have my own opinion. This pub is the ideal walkers rest location, set just near the start of the trail for Kinder Scout, just far enough outside Hayfield village to be quietly off the well trodden track. The situation is charming, actually beautiful after the stresses of the city. It is surrounded by trees, steep fields with sheep and dry stone walls with amazing birds and wildlife. The pub room was clean with fresh towels, soap and shampoo, an adequately sized TV, kettle and coffee/tea with chocolates. The food was hot, freshly cooked and delicious and the staff very helpful, charming and friendly. Breakfast is plentiful with fresh sliced loaf, coffee and tea ad lib and a delightfully friendly lady who is eager to please. I had a great stay there travelling alone and made many companions in the bar in the evening. I last stayed at The Sportsman 16 years ago and alas, it has not changed, apart from the landlord. A revamp would definitely do this pub justice in what is potentially a gem of a ramblers rest. OK if you're looking for something more up market and Ritzy, then this certainly will not be the stopover for you. If you are looking for a modest atmosphere, hearty, warming food, a great breakfast, a good pub bar and polite, smiling faces, plus a clean comfortable bed for just £60 after a long and arduous fell walk , then this makes a heart warming stopover. I didn't find it too pricey either. It's definitely got more charm than a Premier Inn or a Travelodge and the people are real!

We stopped for a small libation be forcing doing the Kinder Scout walk. The pub is a great rendezvous point, but it seems dark and dinghy. It is as if it is making a good income from the local camp site and dies not need to try any harder. If this is the case, it is unfortunate, because with a lick of paint here and there, a touch of maintenance, it could be much more appealing. We never stayed over and would not be tempted to given what we saw.

The food is hearty and the beers are good.
