Located just off the artist street in Howick, KwaZulu-Natal Province is the 310 foot Howick Falls which lies on the Umgeni River. The Zulus named the falls the "Place of the Tall One" and have declared that the falls is the evidence of a giant serpent-like creature. There have been 40 recorded deaths that have occurred since 1851 as a result of being swept over the falls or even suicide. Although the government officials have attempted to stop local Zulu women from washing their clothes at the top of the falls the practice continues which can be observed from the overlook on the hillside across from the falls. There are many vendors selling their souvenirs in the overlook. After viewing the falls walk up one block to visit the local artist crafts shops or rest with a coffee break. Parking is plentiful and the view ism free. Definitely worth a visit if you are in the area.
