We visited the chapel as part of the wild about Orkney trip. and can only say what a very special place it is quite amazing and spectacular the results attained by these gentlemen who stayed here during the hostility's ( I do not wish to refer to them as prisoners) the level of craftsman ship is simply breath taking as is the ingenuity of these men with the items they used such as Bully Beef cans for the light fixtures and horse shoes for the rood. As for the painting this is truly spectacular. A must visit

A lot of people have read the story of how Italian POW's, in the Second World War, were drafted in to Orkney build the Churchill Barriers to Scapa Flow and how they were permitted to build a small chapel out of 2 nissan huts in which to pray. Very few of us get the chance to travel to Orkney to see it for ourselves. We were lucky enough to be on a Round Britain Cruise and see this little gem for ourselves.
The story surrounding this little chapel is remarkable none more so for the fact that after falling into disrepair the original POW who painted the inside returned to restore it many years later. Now cherished and loved by Orkadians and Italians alike.
Well worth a visit if you ever get the chance.

We visited thirty years ago and again today. A truly remarkable story of the strength of the human spirit and the ingenuity that can be shown with very limited materials. If you visit, the memory will stay with you - it certainly did for me.

One of Orkneys newest attractions, and With a very fascinating history. A Place I've heard of and read about earlier. My wife was more impressed by neolitic and viking sites, while I Place this one among the top attractions. Easy Access. well documented.
