Take the U3 from Marienplatz all the way to Fürstenried West and and a quick cab ride to Forsthaus Kasten.
We never would have known this existed had it not been for friends living in the area. While Munich is full of tourist food, and some of it very good, Forsthaus Kasten is for locals. And the food is worth the trip. The menu features expected Bavarian favorites and also soups, steak, salads, and fresh desserts well beyond strudel.
There is, of course, an outdoor beer garden and dogs are welcome, one of my favorite parts of Germany....how dog friendly it is and how well-behaved the dogs are.
A little out of the way but would absolutely go back should I find myself in Munich again.

Dear JMWC2002,

thanks so much for the review.

Great that the enthusiasm for our beergarden goes beyond the Munich Area and that we were able to serve you some traditional Bavarian food.

We hope you will visit us again on our next trip to Munich,
your Forsthaus Kasten Team

Visited the Forsthaus Kasten beer garden in Gauting with my family and friends recently. The weather was beautiful and sunny, which perfectly complemented what this place has to offer. The FK is apparently open on any day with good weather. Presumably this means between May and October primarily.

The FK serves Paulaner beer, which is always welcome in the summer sun. There is a large playground for kids, next to a few pens with donkeys and goats. On the other side there is a huge kids' area with bouncy castles and much more. We didn't visit the latter as we thought the kids would then never allow us to leave.

The food was always great - the pretzels (Brezen) were fresh and delicious; the half-chicken (halbes Hendl) was tender and not dry (which can often be the case).

One thing to be noted though - it's on the pricey side and you can easily spend a fair amount in a short space of time. However that came as no surprise given the quality.

Overall we had a fantastic day out and I would highly recommend this place. It will certainly be one of our regular stopping points this summer and summers to come.

We stop at this place while cycling on the way from Planegg to Stanberg, through the forest, and it’s raining. Nice place to sit for a while and drink beer and relax in nature. Quite big place with beer garden and park for kids and many outdoor activities.

Outstanding service and really great food. We ate traditional Bavarian food which was very well prepared. My children ate from the kiddies menu, which was also fantastic for them, as the menu included pomes (chips) which you don't always find in traditional Restraunts. Was a great evening. Only negative thing is that to jump on the trampoline for the kids was an additional €5 per child.

Dear Lynne & Bodo,

thanks for your feedback and great that you enjoyed the restaurant. We appreciate it!
Besides the traditional meals on the menu, we also serve seasonal and local dishes to vary the selection. We find that good quality products and a healthy meal are essential.

The trampoline does cost 5€ per child but then the kids can jump for as long as they want which cannot be taken for granted.

We hope you will visit us again on your next visit to Munich,
Your Forsthaus Kasten Team
