We couldn't make a reservation as we couldn't get through be telephone nor email. In addition their website is unfinished. The reason for this is that their owner died and their phone lines and email got cut off. I was advised after staying there that the following numbers could be called until this problem is fixed (713 261 336, 784 261 336 and 767 261 336). I don't know why they got cut off as the hotel is booming.
We therefore arrived at 7 p.m. without a reservation after a hard 12.5 hour drive from Pemba in Mozambique. We were lucky to get the last double room, although they had 2 expensive suites untaken. From a conversation with the friendly manager we found out that the hotel is often fully booked during week nights except for the 2 more expensive suites. Therefore try and reserve unless you want to pay for a suite. The cost of a double room costs about USD 65 and a suite (2 rooms and 2 bathrooms) is just less than double that. The rate includes breakfast, a bottle of beer, bottle of water and a coke! Try and pay in TZS as we didn't get a good exchange rate. Banks with ATM's and parking are close by.
The hotel is very modern with large aluminium glass windows in the rooms and balconies on the upper level. The rooms are spacious and it is just a few little touches that let down the rooms. The shower is above the bath but as there is no shower curtain some people obviously have wet the floor and water has spilled onto the room carpet creating a slight musty smell. Our room was dark as 2 bulbs had burnt out and I had to get that sorted out. There was a nice big bed with a mosquito net and a TV with not many channels of interest to foreigners.
The hotel has a pool but it wasn't that clean. It backs onto the estuary and there is a sandy beach. There is plenty of secure parking. We had supper there and it was fine. The breakfast looked a bit weird to start with but then they came and offered eggs and there was fruit as well.
Overall we were happy with the hotel and would have an overnight stop there again. If crossing from Mozambique over the Unity Bridge the only real overnight alternative is in Masasa. We couldn't see anything great listed in our guide book but a tour group of 15 Italians spent the night there and we later heard there was some OK accommodation there.
