Tasty, if a bit fussy, and not for big eaters. Dishes are beautifully presented but seem costly in comparison to other local places

In late September this year, we were part of a small group of seven Australians travelling through Southern Italy. We have been travelling together on an annual basis for the past nine years.
We found "La Locanda" a delight. The food and service was impeccable and at a reasonable tariff, ----- and the complimentary series of local spirits proved to be a delight.
Mary would like to make special mention of the host Pinuccio who was particularly helpful and gracious in arranging for emergency dental treatment with his friend Dottore Vincenzo Piragini.
His courtesy has not been forgotten.

Finding such a superb meal in a formerly unknown corner of Italy (for us) was a true delight! This was one of the two best meals we had in 15 days in Italy, and was considerably better than some that were much more reputed and expensive. Our waiter was gracious, had a terrific sense of humor and joie de vivre, and recommended excellent choices of local wine and food. He even gave us a wrapped up bag of food to take with us for snacks. The appetizers of fresh sardines and a potato cake in a light cheese sauce were terrific, and the pasta (they even offered fresh gluten free pasta for my celiac disease!) was divine. The ravioli my husband had was exceptional. But the star of the evening was the pork in a fruit purée, flavors you'd never have thought to put together, but a dish that melted in the mouth. Everything focuses on fresh local ingredients. This was a restaurant well worth a detour!

We returned to Locanda di Alia, after having stumbled upon it the first time six years ago. We stayed for two nights. It did not disappoint in having two more exquisite dinners at the restaurant. We would travel here again just to experience another wonderful meal, really the best in Italy. We did not order but let our wonderful waiter guide us. The service and attention can not be matched.
The hotel location is also very good for exploring the Monte Pollino area.

It is well worth your time to include this destination when traveling in Italy. You will stay at a locanda where thought and design were considered in every aspect. Interesting furniture and art work. Even the dinnerware and glasses reflect the extraordinary taste of the owners. Then there is the food. This is a wonderful dining experience. Each dish is creative but simple. The ingredients and cooking skills of Gaetano are the best you will encounter. You will be guided through your meal, and stay, by his brother. Together they have created a wonderful experience that people who appreciate good food and hospitality will love.
