“Beautiful Villa right in the middle of nowhere”
Reviewed 28 June 2015 for a stay in June 2015

Villa Kiriaki is a beautiful villa in the middle of the Cretan mountains. You should really pass a place called "nowhere" on the way here as it really is in the middle of nowhere.

There is a small private driveway, door in every wall as is the Cretan way, great little pool which is very clean, lovely gardens with beautiful flowers, compulsory olive trees and great views down the valley to the sea beyond. The villa is on two levels, with one large open plan room on the ground level, with sofa, chairs, two dining areas, open plan kitchen, TV with DVD player and a toilet and sink in a side room.

Upstairs there are two bedrooms and a bathroom with sit in bath / shower and an outside balcony dining area - really nice for eating al fresco as the sun sets behind the mountains opposite.

We were greeted with homemade olive oil, raki (!) and bowls of fruit by Mrs Kyriaki who we think lives at the farm next door occasionally.

Outside is excellent, with so many seating areas to choose from - set of comfy chairs, sun loungers, dining table, handmade hammock, swing chair - all surrounding the lovely pool.

We loved it when Mrs Kyriaki brought around some freshly baked (and still warm) goat's cheese pastries she has just made. The next day she brought around some more fresh fruit. The following day some of her homemade cheese and home grown apricots. We had fresh cucumbers from her garden and apples from her trees - really nice touches without ever being intrusive.

If you want somewhere in the heart of a village, near the local tavernas, or with somewhere to walk to at night for a quick drink - forget villa Kyriaki. There is nothing close by and I mean nothing. If you want seclusion, isolation, the whole place to yourself and just want to be left to it - then villa Kyriaki is the place for you.

As a solo couple we found this place superb. Lovely and quite throughout the days, totally isolated from the contacts of modern life (unless you want to reconnect with the free wifi) Great way to get away from it all for a week or two.

Felt like a home away from home, well laid out villa, with just the right amount of homeliness and not too much clutter.

A few small niggles but certainly nothing to put us off a great stay here. Some people come on holiday to dine out and be looked after. However as the villa is a 30 minutes' drive down windy mountain roads, you do need to self-cater most evenings.

The kitchen could do with just a few small extras: decent large knife, tongs, more glasses and maybe a microwave.

We had booked the villa with Freelance Holidays and all of the information provided was excellent. Superb directions from Chania airport, excellent information file in the villa - was more like an entire book, filled with 20 years of local knowledge, maps, diagrams, tourist information, places to see, language tips. Can't really think of anything it didn't cover.

Sadly this whole experience was rather let down by the yapping little dog next door. Every morning at 5am it would start barking for about an hour (sometimes longer). The dog was closer to our villa than to the farm house next door. So we tried sleeping with the windows shut. No difference as they were single glazed. This did ruin any possibility of sleep. Sadly this is just nature and the way of life in Crete, but if you come to somewhere like Villa Kyriaki, in the middle of nowhere, you are doing it because you want peace and quiet. We did not get this at 5AM.

Add to this the quality of the double bed and very little good sleep was had through the night. So OK this just meant that we had to do more lying down and sleeping throughout the day which wasn't a great loss, however the bed is a rather important item to have right in a villa of this standard and quality.

All of this said, and with the lack of quality sleep; villa Kyriaki is an excellent place to unwind for a week, drink in the Cretan way of life, relax and remove all of the stresses of a modern life.
