We visited Balos by sea with the first stop on Gramvousa island. Our rented car was small and not suitable for the road to Balos, but if you can go there by car I would suggest that, because I would have liked to stay more here, an entire day.
Balos was for me the best, I liked it more than Elafonissi. The water was clear, blue, hot and with waves, amazing. Also snorkeling is a must, like in any other beach in Greece.
Do not forget to take a lot of water woth you.

Take a boat trip around the headland and view this fabulous unspoilt lagoon in all its glory.
You will be amazed at the colour and temperature of the sea.
Not to be missed

Don't miss the experience to visit Balos. It is an incredible place. We had a long walk on the mountains surrounded by sheep and couldn't imagine what was coming. Paradise!!!

This is by far the most stunning place I've ever swam at. We came here in October so it was fairly quiet and not too packed. I swam in one of the lagoons and ahead of me was only a huge mountain. It was an amazing experience. There is an amazing sense of space when you're there. It's hard to explain. But it leaves a mark on you. Truly amazing. As other people mentioned, you need to trek down and then back up a mountain to get there so good footwear is essential. The car journey was far from easy with last 8 km being a gravel road and quite uncomfortable to drive on. It's well worth it though so don't be put off.

The most amazing beach I have ever seen in my life. I strongly recommend it! (You need a car to get there)

We took the trip which had an early morning start (06:10) by being collected from our hotel on the eastern side of the island and then a coach trip Kisamos to catch the ferry, bus trip fine, luxury coach restful with one comfort break each way. The unspoilt beach at Balos Lagoon is beautiful, different temperatures with depth of shallow waters based on sand reflection.no crappy vendors to annoy visitors, wonderful day out.

We came here on the boat trip from kissamos. Well worth going by boat as it's the easy option. You don't have to drive the dirt road and climb down to the beach.

We went with another couple. It’s a bit hard to get to. The beach is beautiful.

We chartered a private boat to get there early enough to be able to get chairs and umbrellas.

Over 1000 people arrived later by cruise boat or hiking down the hills surrounding the beach. (A couple kilometers hike)

The water is beautiful and the refreshment hut had good snack and cold beer at good prices.

Next to Elafonissi this was our favorite Beach in western Crete.

It is not that easy to get there. We went by car. First, there is little less that 8 km of unpaved road. Not in very good condition but I have seen worst examples. It took us approx. 30 minutes to reach the parking space (some drivers drove much faster, apparently not being concerned about their cars). Then there is long descent towards the beach, everything already said by other reviews, I have nothing to add. Another 30 minutes, including several stops to enjoy the view.
But what a view it is! Beautiful, just beautiful. When down, we hired umbrella and two sunbeds, 9 euros. It was not very crowded (end of October), still possible to swim, only wind was unpleasant. We spent splendid 4 hours there. Going upwards took us not much longer than going down.
It is not easy to reach, but it is worth.

Balos beach is one of the many beautiful beaches to visit in Crete.
The views are spectacular.

We took a boat trip to get there, but you can trek from the top of the mountain.

The water is crystal clear and warm. There are lots of fish to see but can sometimes nip your feet.

The beach can get rather crowded also, which makes it hard to find a secluded spot to relax.
