We stayed at the Hotel Prespa from the 14th-21st Jan 2012. I'd read a few reviews that were not particularly complimentary and as we had the holiday as a last minuite deal i was slightly dubious but there really was no need to be! The staff were very pleasant and helpful, some found english a little difficult to understand but they got there in the end. We had a double room on the 2nd floor and it was more than adiquate, a comfy bed, shower and bath with plenty of hot water and the bathroom was immaculately clean. The bedroom area had basic furnishing and decoration but again was clean and all that you need when your spending most of the time on the mountain. The Tv did not get many channels and the english ones tended to be dubbed in bulgarian but this wasn't a major problem for us. There is a mini bar but as the electric goes off when you leave the room its rarely cold, not a massive problem though as the room has a balcony which has a lovely view of the mountain and anything you put out there freezes in about an hour!
I have to agree with some other reviews that the food is often just 'warm' but there is a microwave in the restaurant so you can heat it up yourself. The food is of a decent standard breakfast had cereals, toast, jams, pastries, cheese and ham, a selection of eggs and sausages. Tea, coffee and cranberry juice, you can definitely comfortably fill up for the day. Dinner always had bread, chips, salad bar, some form of pasta and sauce and then a couple of meat options and a selection of pastries and local desserts. Restaurant itself was clean and staff were helpful.
Bar was lovely, a nice open fire in the smoking area and a large non smoking area comfortably furnished, drinks are very reasonable with a pint of bear only 4 lev, 50ml of vodka 2 lev and soft drinks about 2.40 lev.
One down side to this hotel is you need to take a mini bus to the mountain, its only about 10 min trip and they run free from 8am-10.30 am and then back from 3pm to 5.00pm. If you want to get too and fro outside these times you have to take a taxi which is about 15 lev each way. its a bit of a nerve wracking journey as the road conditons were bad when we stayed and the bus drivers seemed a little too relaxed about sliding all over the place but having said that we weren't killed and didn't see any accidents.
The slopes themselves were amazing, great runs for beginner up. We were lucky the snow was amazing while we were there fresh snow regularly and a couple of days it just snowed all day up on the mountain which was amazing. Cold at times -15, -18 so wrap up warm!
In summary for the price we paid an excellent hotel and we would definitely return!
