The ‘secret’ Plas!
Ah! the dear old Plas, a stalwart of the vibrant Narbeth scene for many a year, beloved for it’s Sunday lunches, it’s celebrations of local births , marriages and passings. Many a time I have enjoyed mounting the impressive front stair case to a large airy bedroom over looking the village green.
But not this time! after checking in, as I was anticipating the front stairs, the lady with the key summoned me ‘this way’ and turning our backs to that great front staircase, we moved through the bar, around the back past the loo’s, some storerooms and the kitchen door, yes - the secret ‘Travelling salesman’ garret!’
No fine staircase for me ( although allegedly there is a route ) oh no, we reached a narrow, by comparison, somewhat mean, staicase, the carpet slightly soiled with wear and climbed until reached the top and room 15.Just as the front lobby is all classical hues with the rooms reflecting this, room 15 was very ‘Dunelm, end of sale bargain’ - check the medley of aubergine scatter cushions, the matching side lamps screaming 1980’s mid terrace chic, and the matching bedside tables that bore the patina of previous tea and coffee cups. The bathroom, sadly dated - fore grounding the cracked wash bowl!
Comfort enough it was, the bed was very comfortable, the TV worked, the shower was hot, the window creaked open to give view over the roof tops of Narbeth . The breakfast, always seen as treat had again slightly lost it’s former glory - my plate dominated by half a luke warm beef steak tomato that was neither, fish nor fowl, not quite raw, really not roasted, the thick cut ‘bloomer’ toast, was disappointingly a piece of sliced white bread ( now there is a brand new bakery on the High Street) the butter, 3 miserly knife cut tri angles straight from the fridge !, the sausage tepid. To conclude on a bright note, the ample amount of smoked back bacon was delicious !
Would I return, of course! the Plas has a place deep in our family history - this stay didn’t quite hit former glories, and I will try I book a room at the front, by booking directly with the Plas, rather than through an agent - Booking.com in this instance, and maybe in this there is a lesson for me! Hope to see you soon Plas !
