Ueda is a short train ride from Nagano; much of the ride is in a very long tunnel. As you approach the station you can see the castle from the window It’s not a terribly long walk from the station to the castle grounds, perhaps 20 minutes or so but signage is not good.
The blossoms were at about 30% when we visited, just enough to provide some good photos at the entrance where trees were in bloom and along the canal. The trees in the main area were not yet much beyond bud stage.
The castle entrance gate was the site for two wedding photo shoots which provided many photo ops for us. We did not pay to enter the one castle building, but we were satisfied with what we saw of the exterior.
When we saw the castle from the train we noted that the lower level was in full bloom. We took a long stair down out of the east side of the castle and ended up right at this area. The trees here were the best of the morning and if you stood in just the right place you could capture the castle framed in blossoms. Many photographers were here, snapping away.
We spent about an hour and half on this visit. We figured that even if the trees were all in bloom, another half hour would be all we would need. We were satisfied that we had photographed everything we could and everything we wanted in the time we spent and we returned to Nagano for the afternoon.
Before you enter the castle there are public toilets - use them.
There’s a public toilet in parking area at street level.
