We stayed here with extended family (12 of us altogether) for our wedding. We were greeted on arrival with a bottle of fizz and a locally baked loaf of bread along with a lovely note welcoming us.
The house is well equipped and comfortable, laid out over three floors with 2 lovely gardens. The bedrooms are lovely, with all of the finishing touches that made them feel luxurious. The kitchen was ideal for our needs and we easily managed to cook a meal for 15 the night after the wedding. The dining room is stunning, with a lovely large table and enough chairs for all.
The pub and hotel nearby served meals for the nights we felt like going out and there are two cafes within easy walking distance. Michelle was lovely, friendly and welcoming and offered some good hints for places to eat locally.
We really enjoyed our week at the Red House and hope to visit again soon.
Our three generation MacRae family of six, ranging in age from sixteen to eighty, spent the first week of August in this lovely home. It felt like home right away and provided all that we needed for a very comfortable stay. We used five of the very clean, spacious bedrooms, with very comfortable beds and stunning views from the windows. The new kitchen was equipped with everything that we needed, and then some. The table in the beautiful, red dining room accommodated the six of us for meals, as well as a large puzzle that was a work in progress, for the whole week. Morning coffee and afternoon tea at the picnic table in the front yard, looking over the loch to the Isle of Skye, was a peaceful time to enjoy the beauty and to appreciate the charming, small village of Dornie. We made regular trips to the castle, had tea at a window in the café overlooking it and found the gift shop gifts as good as any we found elsewhere. An evening stroll, to see the lighted castle, was a highlight of the day. The Clachan Pub, two doors from the house, was a warm and welcoming place for all ages of the family who spent evenings in conversation with the colorful, interesting locals whom they met there. The Dornie Shop conveniently provided us with provisions during the week, filling in after we had purchased the bulk of our groceries en route to Dornie from Inverness. The most wonderful bread and other baked goods are to be found at a bakery a short walk across the Dornie bridge, to the next village, but they sell out fast in the morning. It's worth the trip to the delightful shop, although some bread is delivered daily to the Dornie Shop, as well.
Michelle was so easy to work with. She was responsive and pleasant and she and her husband had created a lovely home that we were privileged to call our own for too short a time. She arranged for my son, whose passion is kayaking, to spend five hours on the water in Plockton. He so wanted to paddle Scotland and wasn't disappointed. All of us would like to return as soon as possible, even our sixteen year old.
I can't imagine a better place for a family, or group of friends, to spend time together, than at the Red House in Dornie. Thank you, Michelle
This was the perfect place for us to spend a week in as three small groups came together from around the country.
It was cold when we arrived; but the house was warm; and it was easy to keep warm, though we additionally opted to light the coal fire; the views of the loch and the castle were magical.
The kitchen spacious and has everything you could think of
Walking to the castle in the evening scored us a sighting of otters; at the weekend - stroll across the bridge to the cafe for the best sticky buns ever!!
From the moment we walked through the door we knew we had made the right choice. We had 3 families made up of 6 adults and 6 children (half aged 6 and the other half aged 8). The space blew us away. Plenty of cupboard space in the kitchen to store supplies. Well equipped kitchen. Washer and dryer do keep the troops looking clean. The dining room was spacious and everyone had plenty of arm space. The bedrooms suited us perfectly. The grown ups all got beautiful bedrooms with plenty of drawer and hanging space and the children loved having a boys and girls "dormitory/ area". The bathrooms were clean. We could not fault the house at all and all of us would strongly recommend it. The location was also a hit, we spent a lot of time on the Isle of Skye. Dornie itself is a beautiful village. The store and post office were a bonus plus the castle bring within walking distant. Can't wait to stay again.
Arrived on Hogmany, two families, one from Canada. We really wanted to give our Canadian family a Scottish New Year and at the Red House it was just perfect. It helps being so close to Eilan Donan Castle but the icing on the cake was the owners son piping in the New Year, just made it very majical for us all. Memories that will be cherished, cannot thank Michelle and her family enough.
Oh the house was very large, very comfortable, a home from home. The stunning dining room accommodated 11 of us easily, we had great games nights here.
The garden at the fron was lovely, we were so very lucky to see otters just beyond the house on a number of occations. We adored Dornie and will be back, hopefully to this stunning house. Thank you so much.
